Oil Light!

Post by Jooboi89 » Sun Sep 09, 2018 10:20 pm

:? Hi All!!

My oil light came on today, i’m usually worried when lights start showing as I actually have no idea about cars and they always seem to fail on me.

Any how, it had a service in December and although its not due again til December or another 10k, I can’t help but wonder why it would be low on oil already. Is this a common fault? I think i do have a small oil leak somewhere, are these potentially big bills?

Any advice welcome!

BMW list acceptable oil usage of 1 litre per 1000km. How many miles have you done, and do you know if the garage filled it to the max at the last service?

srhutch,

It was on half way around 2 months ago.

Iv covered about 4k since so that would make sense to need topping up...?

I only bought the car 2-3 months ago.

According to what others have said when i researched, its perfectly ok to run... even when the light shows you have 250 miles (but obv needs topping up asap) i just wasnt sure on how much oil is generally used

I've no experience of the 2.0, but if 1 litre per 1,000km is acceptable and you've done 4,000 miles I'd say that's excellent! By BMW standards more than 3 litres would have been OK! :o

And if it was on half-way 2 months ago it's only used half a litre. Just get some in pronto.

I tend to stick upto a litre in every 3 months or so, they do burn a little bit of oil so the light coming on isn't uncommon between services. Buy a 4 or 5 litre tub and stick it in the garage so you can top it up from time to time.

Suggest you buy a 1 litre bottle for the boot & then obtain a 4 litre bottle for ‘topup’ from Costco or Eurocarparts.... to fill up ur 1 litre when used.

My old 3.0 used to give a flashing almost like clockwork every 3k miles, your usage is definitely normal but as above, always fill ASAP

Thanks everyone, I bought a 1litre earlier, and it's now at 3/4 mark as I didn't want to risk over-fill. All is good!
