HELP! Yellow ABS,DSC and handbrake lights on.

Post by Esper06 » Sat Jul 28, 2018 12:07 am

Started my car this morning and all of these warning lights were on :o They don’t turn off when turning the car on and off. I don’t have the tech to get the error codes I just wanted to know if anyone has ever had this and how much it costed to fix it.

Not 100% sure without a positive diagnostic and will need a reset no doubt but sounds like a possible brake presume sensors ( there's 2 by the abs unit ) and it's quite a common fault.

It will be the abs/dsc unit, rebuild time unfortunately seems very common on the SI models

It may be the pump but, on the other hand, you may be lucky and it's just a sensor.... first thing to do is pull the codes....

If you can't pull the codes, there may be a member nearby who will be willing to assist.... or you may want to think about getting something like one of these

If it's the pump you should see something like

005DF0 DSC Hydraulic Unit: Pump Motor
005DF1 DSC Hydraulic Unit: Pump Motor Connector Fault

Then you're heading for replacement/rebuild - I seem to remember people having good service from ecutesting.com

If you're lucky it may just be one (or possibly both) of the pressure sensors - this is normally shows as just handbrake & dsc light but can trigger all three (it did for me). The readings from the two pressure sensors have to agree within a certain tolerance and if one goes tits-up you'll get the warning lights

If it's a pressure sensor you should see codes like this telling you which sensor is at fault

5E24 Pressure Sensor 1/2 not plausible
5E21 Pressure Sensor 2 Electrical failure

Replacement sensor was about £90 and took 10 mins to fit (27mm spanner) plus the time for a brake bleed.

Could also be a fuse. Check the manual there are 4 for the abs and dsc system.

Mine lit up when the battery got a bit low. A brief charge and a few drives to top it up and all was well again. I feel lucky that it wasn’t anything expensive, this time.

It’s clear that there are a number of possible causes for these lights to come on. Definitely worth taking time to carefully diagnose the problem before jumping in and spending a fortune on something that may not actually be the cause.

Have you checked the brake fluid level? I had the same happen after I had a front calliper change. Hose had a slight leak and as it got low had all 3 lights come on!! Took it back to the garage and they fixed the problem.

Post by Esper06 » Sat Jul 28, 2018 3:16 pm

Thanks for the info guys just a quick update. I got in the car this morning the lights were still on I drove it around in heavy rain for about 40 minutes and after 10 minutes the lights went off, they came back on 5 minutes after that then went off again, the warning lights have been off for about 2 hours now. Im still worried though and I am going to order this as suggested by you guys.

I was quoted by BMW for diagnostics at £99 :headbang: what a joke.
Thanks for all your help ill keep you updated.

I had the same three yellow lights shortly after I got the car. I took it back to the garage and they fixed it pretty quick, said it was to do with front geometry and track rod ends being replaced for the MOT and the tracking not being set properly (twats!), causing the steering angle sensor (I think it was) to throw a wobbly.

Is your steering wheel straight, when your driving in a straight line? Mine was slightly out and the code came up after driving on a long straight piece of road for the first time, chatting to the very apologetic salesman, he said the other things it could be was the angle sensor itself or maybe one of the ABS sensors.

I can't remember if he said they needed to reset the angle sensor to clear the lights, but after the tracking was done and the steering wheel centred all has been rosy since.

HELP! Yellow ABS,DSC and handbrake lights on.

Post by Esper06 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 11:01 pm

UPDATE.

So my OBD came today and a scanned the abs system and all it gave me was this.

Pleae send the date to customer service!
03 03 5a 80 00 00 06 76 91 62 02 20 00 30 00 00 20 06 10 30 18 00 00 00 00 86 00 00 00 00 00 00

Not a clue as i havent used one before, when i scan other parts it comes up with the part number etc but when you press back it asks you if you want to diagnose or dlete the warning light, when i do it to the abs system i dont get this option, it just shows whats above.

If anyone can help me out id appreciate it.

What obd reader is it? Not all of them actually read bmw abs and airbag modules. I had to buy a specific one from bavarian dominator. If it's some cheapo eBay one it's probably not going to help. Mine for instance pulls this.

The 3 warning lights on my dash came and went as the ABS/DSC pump played "now I'm faulty, now I'm not" for a couple of weeks before finally deciding "yep, I'm definitely faulty" so don't read anything into the warning lights disappearing for a while.
It was stuck brushes in the pump (probably not driving it hard enough to activate ABS as much as I should have) and an overhaul saw it fixed for a good price (compared to replacement cost).
As mentioned above, my codes were also 5DF0 and 5DF1 (read with INPA, and I think CARLY will show these codes as well)

Don't immediately jump to replace/repair pump. These also commonly occur when the steering angle sensor has been knocked out of shape. Often happens after doing tracking etc.
