Roof failed

Post by Sam3773 » Thu Jun 21, 2018 2:31 pm

Hey all,

So after thinking about how lucky I am to have a working, unmodified roof on my 54 plate 2.2 Zed the other day, the roof has today failed!

Usual symptons of a well watered motor: Windows drop, roof unclicks, silence from behind me and a flashing red light on the controls. I haven't checked the fuse yet, but my understanding is there's usually no lights on the control if it's a fuse problem?

Either way, I've seen some people have moved their motors to the boot. I'm keen to get this working as soon as possible with the sun beaming, and living in Somerset there aren't too many other members around here who can do it (I suspect!)

I've searched the internet high and low, but does anyone have a link to the guide on how to do this, ideally without removing the roof?

I've tried doing the manual open/close using the red handle, but it comes out, I turn it to lock it in place, but the roof still doesn't shift. I suspect the thing's seized to the motor so pulling the red handle does nothing.

Any advice/tips? The motor hasn't been slower or experienced any failures before. Sudden death!

Cheers,

Sam.

Thanks Alan!

In my impatience with the sun beaming, I decided to dive in the boot last night and follow some instructions on here.

I'm at a stage where the shelf is out, I've unclipped the hydraulic cables around the boot to give them a bit of slack. I've cut a cable tie holding the unit to the side and removed loads of tape.

This is where I'm stuck and may end up coming up the M5.. I can't get the top off of the bloody thing. There's a little protruding bit which feels like a clip that clips the top on but the bloody thing isn't pulling off.

I read that you can pull the whole black case out, by cutting two cable ties. A small one attaching it to the side and a big one at the bottom of the case.. I've cut the top on but the bottom one is missing.. I've had a camera in there and it definitely isn't there. The case just wiggles side to size but doesn't pull up.

Any tips before I give up?

Its probably not a cable tie holding but a pin that slots through a bracket on the motor casing. It's bad enough to get off when you can see what you're doing, so I'm not surprised. You just need to unclip it and work it lose.

(You shouldn't need to un-clip any hoses from the hoop, in order to get the motor out. There is enough slack near the motor to bring it back to the boot anyway)

Thanks again, Alan. Spot on.

I used a hook and managed to pull the top off of the housing. Next problem (and hopefully last) - The motor/pump won't move. I've tried pulling it out the housing and can hear the slush noise of the water in the housing, but it's not moving. Am I missing something to get the motor out of the housing?

Sitrep:
The motor is out of the housing and on the plastic tray, covered in water. The cables run under the bottom part of the casing underneath and back up, meaning I need to get this out prior to it being able to reach the boot.

I have felt and seen with a camera far down and can't see a cable tie holding these cables to the casing. My only option seems to be to remove the lower half of the casing.

As Alan alluded to, I think it's held on solely by that clip at the back of the casing, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove it. The lower casing just moves around on this point. And of course now there's a motor and pump in the way!

Any tips much appreciated.

This is the part where people generally exercise brute force, I believe. I did mine a few weeks ago. I got a good grip of that lower casing and pulled it hard away from the restriction. It broke free, and in doing so it breaks a bit of plastic moulding on the outside of the lower motor casing. You're going to throw the casing away anyway do at this point, you aren't damaging anything that you need. You're almost there! Incidentally, whereabouts in Somerset are you? I'm near Weston Super Mare.

Hero, thank you. Night off tonight but I'll dive in the boot first thing. Been pulling it toward the boot in the hope it snaps but nothing so far.

I'm in Yeovil so not far at all. Between you and Alan, the M5 is covered for people I can go begging to if I can't get it.

Cool, maybe creep in tomorrow morning and take it by surprise! I think I was generally pulling it rearward. Took about 10-15 seconds and a fair amount of force to get it to yield. Hope it doesn't put up too good a fight

Good news! Hopefully.

Under the cover of 30 degree heat, I attacked. Took half an hour of me, a 6ft 6 man in the boot, legs flying everywhere to get it. The trick for my was lifting and pushing forward toward the passenger seat. Bit of force and snap.

Doesn't look like a lot of liquid in there though. Hope that's a normal amount? I can't see a leak anywhere..

Now to bring this back to life.

Rather miraculously, I bit of WD40 in the motor, without taking the motor off the pump, and it's alive! Now to mount it permanently in the boot.

Thanks all for the help!
