Steering moaning at me!

Post by Magicarcher » Mon May 21, 2018 12:18 pm

Occasionally my steering makes a moaning noise when using full lock manures at low speed. It seams to be mostly when it is hot. Any ideas what it can be?

The steering rack may need re-greasing under the bellows. Its quite common for this to be the source of a groaning noise on the E85/6 apparently, although I've not experienced it myself.

Under the bellows? Don’t suppose you have a pic of where I’m looking as mine does this too.

I stoppped mine by greasing where the steering column meets the rack . You need to get to it under the car.

Thats the part of the steering rack that needs to be relubed generously with axle/bearing grease.
This is a very very common problem and fix.

you need to snip the cvboot type clamps (one time use only), get new ones from the dealer or ebay and clamp them in place with cvbootclamp pliers (can be had on ebay for about £7 delivered).
Dont use jubilee type clamps, they dont apply constant pressure

Thanks for your excellent photo and explanation. I haven't come across axle/bearing grease (well not since working my 1970 Austin 1300 manyyy years ago). What should I look for?

Quick question; best way to access via diy car ramp or must it be in axle stands?

Bumping this as mine has gone from a groan to a clunk when turning the wheel left. I'll get under the car tomorrow but hints are helpful as I'll have to tolerate midday sun when I'm doing it :D
