2007 2.5 si manual gearbox oil

Post by Mark R » Sun May 20, 2018 7:20 pm

Hi guys, appreciate some wisdom if possible.
Going to carry out a gearbox oil change on the above car, question is I believe GL4 (75w80) was the standard oil spec but some now say GL5, however have read a couple of reports about this stripping the brass components.

Any thoughts comments would be greatly received.

Thanks Mark.

I changed mine back in April 2017. I always use Castrol oils in my vehicles and so used Castrol Syntrans B75W (API GL-4, ZF TE-ML 11) in the gearbox and Syntrax Long Life 75W-90 (API GL-5, ZF TE-ML 05A,12B,17B,19C,21A, BMW Non LS Rear Axles) in the diff. The diff took almost exactly one litre and the gearbox slightly more. The car was on stands and level. The Zeds mileage at the time was only just over 65k but the colour and condition of what came out of both the box and diff was quite horrendous...not to mention the awful stink ! The diff is definitely much quieter and the gear changes much smoother. Well worth doing

You want a GL4 oil for the gearbox, but to confuse matters some oils do have accreditation for both GL4 and GL5 (such as the Millers 75w80 I used) so just be aware of that

Have used Castrol and Red Line in mine, and been happy with both. As long as it's suitable then change it, that's more important than minor brand differences. 30k is the interval I aim for

Thinking of changing mine, those who have changed it, do you fit new drain plugs? If you do, presumably a main dealer part.

I did, for the sake of a few quid it seems pointless not to.

Fitted Syntrans B to my 3.0i at the weekend, what a difference. My knotchy gearchange is considerably smoother and I actually don't mind accelerating rapidly from a standing start now.
