Shoddy windscreen replacement

Post by DashBedrock » Wed May 16, 2018 4:58 pm

Arrived home from work to see my lovely new windscreen and was confronted with the appalling workmanship shown in the pics.
Terrible seal and a broken scuttle panel ( I think that's the name ) on both sides.
It was installed by a mobile technician so I've been down to their base and they've assured me it will be sorted out Saturday morning.
We shall see, I'm not overly confident. :x
My apologies for the orientation of the pics

Disgraceful.
How can they repair the panel. Replace for me more like.
Shocking. Who was the company that done the work?

Shoddy windscreen replacement

Post by ben g » Wed May 16, 2018 10:09 pm

The windscreen seals are known to be shoddy quality. Fortunately mine was fine when it was replaced last week. They will tell you the windscreen needs to be removed again to fit a new one, but it doesn't. It just pulls out and a new one fits around the screen. It's not even a seal, it's just a bit of trim that hides the sealant.

The scuttle panels are known to break when removed. They're cheap bits of plastic and get very brittle as they age. Not too bothered with mine, but if you want it replaced, then they'll be in for a surprised when they find out how much a new ones costs

Good luck

It was Auto Windscreens in Leeds, my insurance put me through to them. Without a doubt it needs a new panel.

And the bloke walked away thinking that was an acceptable job done! Jeez the standard of workmanship is like so much I have seen before and frankly I despair with what must surely have been a couldn't care less attitude by the installer.
I think this time I would oversee the entire operation and not be bluffed into thinking they know what they are doing because patently they don't.

I don't think I'd give them a second chance. Have you spoken to your insurers about it? Why do they think it reasonable that the windscreen technician should walk away from the job thinking it was OK?

Please tell us no one signed to accept the job as complete

That is very poor. I had mine done at BMW cotswold recently and even they managed to goof it up albeit not ad badly as yours, so clearly not the easiest of screens to do. They took the screen out again to redo the trim, and replaced the scuttle panel foc (it's something like £250 iirc) as they had damaged it (though they were convinced they hadn't). At least that made the £700 bill slightly more palatable!

On an E85/E86, around the edge of the windscreen, on 3 sides, there is a rubber trim that slots onto the edge of the screen. It covers the unsightly gap between windscreen and bodywork and also hid's any sealant.

Althe photos show the top side edges of this trim, which, more often than not, go ripply or split. This is because the windscreen companies use an aftermarket trim piece, rather than OEM.

I'm kicking myself for not insisting on OEM seals, but I thought in this day and age, it wouldn't be an issue.
I was even advised to do so by the forum :headbang:
