WTF
So I decided to clean the Zed today for the first time this year.
Alloys done and then I get the jet wash out. Starting on the roof and moving to the windscreen when I hear a loud "POP".
A massive 500mm crack appears in the screen.
Obviously it's been parked in the scorching sun for a couple of days and it didn't like the cold water.
I've owned cars for 35 years and this is a first for me, never even heard of it happening to anyone else.
Oh well, lesson learnt and moan over.

When you get it replaced, will you be insisting on OEM glass?DashBedrock wrote: ↑Mon May 07, 2018 12:04 pm So I decided to clean the Zed today for the first time this year.

I hadn't given that a thought to be honest. Will they give me the option? Will there be any issues if it's not OEM?

I had an F250 pickup that cracked the windshield due to uneven pressure in the trim/mounting points.... luckily it was under warranty. Hot/cold has the same effect I guess.
Sold the Z4 M Roadster and a 911 Carrera S now I have a 2021 Z4 3.0i

Makes sense I guess, but never heard of it before. Bad luck! Think how clear your vision will be with your shiny new glass though

Did you have a stone chip? I've had a screen go in winter - iced cold screen with demisters on full/hot. Started at a very small chip mark in the screen which was outside the MOT fail zone and had been there for a couple of years

About twenty years ago I had my classic Beetle in for body repairs and was lent a Micra (the MK1 Noddy car version) I went through two screens in a week. Both stone chippings to the upper corner. The screens were so stressed where they mounted on the frame that the smallest pressure cracked them; think the screen formed part of the structure stiffening. Can't imagine this would be the case with a Zed though - particularly on a roadster with the loads on the structure.

I would check that the front strut braces are tight, it's very common for them to slack off which will allow chassis twist on the front end (and dash squeaking/clunking/knocking sometimes). The windscreen frame is structural on the Z4 so will be taking the torsional strain if they are slack stressing the screen, any chip or flaw can easily give out under stress. Worth checking but don't torque beyond the recommended figures (sorry haven't got them to hand)

This happened to me last summer on my coupe.
Didnt see or hear it happen, but it wasnt cracked when i washed the screen, and was when i went back to dry it off having done the rest of the car.
Was a hot day.
Definately insist on OEM rubber when they replace it. Pattern part trims just dont fit.
