Tinny rattle, any suggestions?

Post by mjennings23 » Tue May 01, 2018 7:40 pm

As above, had a tinny rattle for the last couple of weeks and not sure where to look! Sounds like it's coming from the front wheels over bumps, shocks are reasonably new (i.e. less than 12 months) as are the control arms, lollipops, drop links and ARB bushes. They also all look pretty cold and I can't detect any movement.

Brake pads were changed this weekend, with new retaining clips used. Noise was there before and after (although I have managed to introduce pad squeal from not enough grease!)

Anyone else got suggestions?

I should add, it only seems to be happening when the car is warmed up, but that may just be coincidence

Have you checked the braces under the bonnet?

I assume I'd be able to move it with the wheel attached to check, rather than having to mess about jacking up, so I'll give them a wiggle tomorrow!

Won't be this, as I've just replaced them all and new pads at the weekend. Rattle was there before and after, so clearly it isnt the brakes

So I've checked the brake backing plates, certainly feels like the bottom of one front is looser than the other, but it still doesn't seem like it could be banging around. Not had a chance to get the car up today so will check that when I can.

There doesnt, however, seem to be much room at all between the brake disk and the steering knuckle so I suppose any movement in the shield would be banging one way or the other

I fitted new coilovers recently and had a similar noise. Long story short, I had tightened the droplinks too tight and slightly threaded the bolt.

Took to a local garage to change them and they initially thought they were either duff from new or not tightened correctly as usually the noise occurs due to this?

Might be worth checking the droplinks?

Might have found a solution, gave all the wheels a whack today and it seems it's the right rear that was noisy. Pulled the dust shield about and seems to have stopped it, will have a proper look at the weekend to make sure it isn't the spring coil.

No resolution yet! Will get the front end up and check for any loose bolts etc tomorrow if I get the chance, surely it must be something obvious! Bloody irritating...
And to go with it the rear parcel shelf is now rattling too after the heat... Can't win with these cars :headbang:
