Tinny rattle, any suggestions?

mjennings23 wrote: Tue May 08, 2018 9:07 pm No resolution yet! Will get the front end up and check for any loose bolts etc tomorrow if I get the chance, surely it must be something obvious! Bloody irritating...
And to go with it the rear parcel shelf is now rattling too after the heat... Can't win with these cars :headbang:
The 'parcel shelf' in a Zed is utter sh1te ! I stuck heavy bitumen sound deadener to the underside of mine and black carpet to the topside. It doesn't make a muff any more !

Tinny rattle, any suggestions?

Post by mjennings23 » Thu May 10, 2018 8:47 am

I've reached the idea driving that it must be a heat shield or something as it only happens when everything is hot and up to temperature, so my initial thoughts are something hitting either the exhaust or headers as they expand with heat.

Logical, right?

But I will of course check the brake shields, which I suppose also heat up during brake use, as well as the rear springs just because.

Tinny rattle, any suggestions?

Well I finally figured it out, seems 2 bolts on the metal under body plate had worked slightly loose and thus the metal tray could rattle when driving.

Relief! Now I can go back to chasing interior plastic rattles

The one with 8 bolts or the smaller gearbox one? The big one is structural so they need to be tightened up properly, need 150 Nm or so, quite a bit!

The main one, and the correct torque is 59nm +90 degrees which is what they have.

Odd, thought it was more. I know I had one missing and it also caused a knock.

I've actually ordered a new set of them, seems they are designed as 1 time use as its a Torque To Yield spec bolt, for the sake of a few quid I may as well replace them all properly.

A very sound plan, i do wonder if they work loose if used more than once.

Quite possible, I had it off approx 1 year ago to replace the control arms and bushes and reused the bolts, think I missed threadlock on these 2 though but I'll just swap them all out for new ones when they're delivered, peace of mind if nothing else!

Well, new bolts fitted yesterday. They may not be a high torque number but it turns out 59nm is quite easy to do. The plus 90 degrees after however is bloody hard work when you're lying on the driveway on your back!

I'm sure the bolt and mount both being grade 10.9 steel probably makes it a that bit harder too
