Oil light - me again!

But how do I know how much to put in?

If your car has an electronic dipstick the same as the facelift 6pots do, I would search on here to see if the marked levels on the dash equate to the same volume of oil as the bigger engined cars

The N46B20 oil capacity is 4.25l

All the N engines have electronic dipstick. Get the car fully up to temperature and whilst driving along a flat road at a steady speed, press the little button on your dash below your speedo. It will check oil level and quality and then report back (can take a couple of minutes or so). Important to note that if you add oil it can take quite a long time to update (upto 20 minutes) so don't add more than 0.5l at a time until you are sure it has refreshed.

"Fig. 52: Checking Oil Lever
Courtesy of BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, INC.

Synamic oil level measurement begins when following values are reached:
Engine • temperature > 60°C
• Engine speed > 1000 RPM
• Transverse and longitudinal acceleration < 4-5 m/s2

The transverse acceleration signal is supplied by the DSC. The longitudinal acceleration is
calculated from the speed and time factors.

On reaching this value, the oil level indicator is updated approximately 5 minutes after starting
vehicle operation. The oil level is then continuously measured.

The indicator is updated at 20 minute intervals."

Oil light - me again!

So I've had my first proper run out this morning and as suggested got it up to temperature and pressed the button under the speedo/ rev counter.

The display was..........................

(-----)

+ 1.0 L

So my guess - I ain't no mechanic - is add 1 Litre of oil.

Is this correct?

OK UPDATE TIME 3 WEEKS ON.

I should have changed my username to Hans Solo due to the technology of these cars but you live and learn.

I was still getting the oil light UNTIL my mate pointed out press the button at the end of the indicator stalk! DOH! :headbang:

So I have now put 2 lites of SYNER-Z fully synthetic in and the car has said "OK" which is a first for me since I bought it. So my dashboard no longer looks like a Christmas tree.

However,................. when I leave it to idle and warm up thats when I'm now getting blue smoke. Pulls away great, drives great but just when say I'm stuck in traffic and then pull away there is a cloud of blue smoke.

I'm dreading the responses but hit me with them please and put me out of my misery! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Your car said to add one litre of oil, yet you’ve added two litres? Have read that right? :?
