Oil light - me again!

Post by jock156 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 7:56 pm

So I had an oil and filter change about 4 weeks ago. Pulling away in a 2L I get blue smoke like a diesel. Now after 10/20 minutes driving I get the BEEB from the dashboard and the oil light comes on. No leaks that I can see on the driveway! One other thing on start up the car seems to be “hunting”

Any ideas before I take it to the garage AGAIN

If the light hasn't been on for weeks after the change and you have a lot of blue smoke that would suggest to me you are burning a serious amount of oil.

What does the CCV hose look like inside? If it's blocked (common) then you will be drawing oil into combustion chamber and burning, as the vacuum pressure from the intake stroke isn't vented to atmosphere. Would be good to know what the results of a cylinder leakage test showed, but CCV (crank case vent) would be my first go to.

My old z4 ccv was blocked and it would burn a lot of oil, maybe 0.5-1lts per 1k miles. If its been burning oil for a while it might have damaged the catalyst, but if no codes are held for that then I wouldn't worry.

Never drive a car with Blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Get it back to he garage light on or not. Too much oil can knacker your engine as fast as too little. :o

Well they have had it for 4 days now! Bad news is its "burning oil like a good un" and looking at a possible engine rebuild :-(

Obviously I've been off loaded a lemon which seriously pisses me off no end!

The garage don't do rebuilds but will talk it through with me tomorrow morning and give me a number for someone local who can do it!

Now off to get pissed and kick the cat! FFS!

That’s strange, was it not burning oil before the oil change then? And have they replaced the ccv before saying it needs an expensive engine rebuild?

did you buy it privately or from a garage? Obviously as you've bought it recently you have comeback on a garage.
As has been stated above have the garage checked the CCV? If not hopefully it might just be that, however the 2.0 engine is also known to have quite a few issues including worn rings/valve stem oil seals and guides which would all cause this. Hopefully its just the relatively cheap CCV, good luck with it.

Thanks! Bought it privately from a law student who said he couldn't use it any more due to a hip injury and made it difficult to get in/ out of.

He is now driving an MG Roadster which did alert me.

They haven't done anything to the car just told me to come in and they would explain everything to me tomorrow morning (which doesn't fill me with excitement!).

I know nothing about the inards of a car so any info would be greatly appreciated :-). Car drives great, not sluggish just burns a lot of oil?

I would take it for a second opinion at an independent bmw garage to see what they advise before agreeing to any work being carried out :?

I would make sure it requires engine rebuild and its not just CCV. BMW specialist is your best bet, do your research though as quality varies.

Do you have legal cover on home insurance? If so I would call them for advice. It is not always true you have no comeback on private vehicles. Did you ever ask what its condition was? If it had any faults? If the warning light came on a couple of days after buying it seems obvious to me that he reset it prior to sale, not a tough job these days.

Thanks for the input guys!

Now I always seen it as “SOLD AS SEEN” on a receipt was your get out of jail card. I don’t have that other than sold to Joe Muggins for x amount. Is there any recourse in this?

From another forum “faulty valve stem seals” if this is the case what sort of cash are we looking at?

How old, how many miles, what sort of history might help to norrow it down a bit . Although diagnosis by proxy can sometimes over complicate or over simplify.

As others have said, the CCV is a distinct possibility - if bunged up it can cause the dreaded blue smoke. What’s it do when doing a downhill on the over run then giving it some throttle?

On start up no smoke whatsoever. Get to the right temperature and give it some beans that’s when you see the blue smoke. When warm and idles nothing just when you put your foot down. Having said that it’s went through 4.5l oil in 4 weeks!

Thanks for the help guys!
