What is the problem with the filter that causes the noise?

Had this on my 2.5si many years ago after dealer changed the oil/filter. Sounded more like a sewing machine from memory.

I have that noise ..was going to investigate the alternator this weekend buit I reckon I'll start with the oil filter now
