Have I just fried my ECU?

Post by Z4 Gaz » Tue Mar 20, 2018 3:37 pm

Was just using a C110 scanner to clear some air bag codes.

Exited back out of the options, so it wasn't in the middle of doing anything, however I forgot to turn the key back to the off position before pulling the cable, now the car wont even turn over.

Have I just fried the ECU? If so how much pain am I about to be in?

What happens when you reconnect your scanner, does it communicate with the car?

If all fails, remove the negative lead from the battery, wait a few minutes, reconnect.

Still communicates ok.
Tried removing the batt. connections.

I should add I hadn't run the car in a week or so, so am now wondering if the battery has gone dead, will put some charge through it and report back.

Fingers crossed.

How long did the programming take? Having the ignition on for 15+ minutes would drain the battery as well.

Not that long.

At the moment when I try and start the car I just get a clicking noise from the engine bay. Going to let it charge for 30 minutes then try again.

Everything like windows still work, lights, sport button illuminates and goes out when pressed still.

Weird if it is, as I worked out it was actually only 4 days since I last had it running. Before that it would sit for a few weeks and start no problem, and started perfectly 4 days ago.

They take a hell of a hit on a 3.0 trying to start it, mine did not even turn on an emergency battery at all.

If you have parked it for 4 days, and you were programming with the ignition on, that can cause a lot of drain.

When you describe that everything works, but not the starter, that is exactly the symptom of an empty battery.

It lives, hurrah.

Now I just need to figure out why I can't get rid of code 9891 as I have an occupancy emulator fitted.

Edit, it wasn't pushed in properly, all fixed, car not ruined, result, thanks guys.

Just charged it for 30 minutes.

Think the battery might be the original, so could probably do with changing it being 15 years old

Tried to start the Z just now and it only just fired on its second attempt.

Checked for a battery drain and that came back all good, settling at 0.02A

Looks like the battery has totally died over the last few days of cold weather without any warning. Got a new one on its way.
