Z4 coupe si oil light

Post by Status » Fri Feb 02, 2018 2:17 pm

Hi peeps need a bit of info if you can, last week done an oil and filter change as oil was a year old and done 5000 miles on it,got car off the Ramos and the orange oil Can was illuminated so reset the light with the diagnostic machine,my mate said it doesn’t have a dip stick,it’s done on the dash,is this correct ? Got home put it in paddock got stuck in mud, long story there, managed to get it out just now and orange oil can light is on again, would this be the obvious ie not enough oil or needs resetting again. Thanks in advance

I think the light means you need to top up the oil, it won't be anything needing diagnostics - have you got read the manual?

^^^This^^^^. You shouldn't need to reset the light with a diagnostic machine - it's done on an electronic oil level sensor. There is a button on your dash behind the steering wheel to check the level but you should do the test whilst driving along a flat road for it to be accurate.

BEWARE!!! the reading doesn't update instantly (can take upto 20 mins to refresh) so don't keep pouring oil in and checking as you will likely over fill.

Hi,

Sorry if this is a daft question but best to start with the basics.... how much oil did you put in? Capacity is 6.5 litres for the N52 engine in your coupe so if it's not had that much put in expect the light to remain on?

Was the warning light on before doing the oil change?

If you're confident it has 6.5 litres in then the only reason for a false reading I can think of would be the oil level sensor in the bottom of the sump?

One of the mechanics done it at my mates garage but I remember him saying it takes about 6.5 litres and he did check it on the dash,so it’s pos not enough oil but I’ll get it on flat ground and take it from there, just waitin for it to settle as had engine running the light wasn’t on before,,thanks guys got replies

the engine has to be running for a few miles before the electronic dipstick will give you a reading, i wonder how long the mechanic ran it for?

You can’t check it unless the engines running (and up to temp) I’m not sure what he did but he definitely didn’t check the oil level

If the oil light wasn’t lit before the oil change but it is now I think I’d drain & measure the oil before changing sensors.
Keep it simple and check the easy stuff first
