Battery draining

Post by edinburghjon » Sat Jan 20, 2018 3:33 pm

Any help appreciated my battery is draining after 2 hours, I took it to a local garage they put a new battery in and the same thing happened. I have Carly and ran a diagnostic iPhone Fault Report - Carly for BMW - 33.2.7 - 2018.01.11.1856 FV

Battery draining

Post by dans6490 » Sat Jan 20, 2018 8:38 pm

I have the same issue but mine doesn’t drain as quick. I’m guessing that the quicker it drains, in theory, the easier it is to diagnose.

I haven’t got round to doing this myself but will initially be trying the following:

“O.k.,what needs done is to leave the key out of the vehicle with the windows rolled up and make sure everything is off with access to the battery.
Set the meter to amperage or milliamp and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.Put the leads in the multi meter the correct way (negative in negative and positive in the amperage or milliamp slot if equipped).
Connect one cable from the meter to the ground cable that was connected to the battery and the other lead to the ground terminal on the battery, this way the current is flowing through the multi meter.
After around 5 to 10 minutes see what the meter reads for a amperage draw.Normally you want to see less then 50 milliamp or less then .05 amp.
If you see over this amount of a battery draw/drain then your vehicle has an electrical component draining the battery.
From here you would remove one fuse at a time with the meter still in place and observe the reading on the meter until you come across one fuse that allows the draw to read below the 50 milliamp. This is the fuse or circuit that has the component on it that is drawing down the battery.Make sure when you remove one fuse if it is not the issue reinstall it and move to the next waiting a minute between each fuse removed to get an accurate reading.
Once you find the fuse or circuit its on then you would look on a wiring diagram to see what that fuse powers and unplug each of those components one at a time until you locate the component causing the draw then this component would need replaced”

Battery draining

All those fault codes just look like the aftermath of a low battery voltage, so individual ECUs could not be contacted by the main diagnostic bus.

Have you got any aftermarket electrical equipment fitted, like Bluetooth kit or aftermarket head unit?

No I don’t have any aftermarket electrics fitted apart from LED bulbs on the interior and on the number plate

..well that explains the interior lighting open circuit error. Dans6490 post contains good tips to finding the culprit but if a new battery is really going flat in 2hrs, that would mean a current drain of 20A or more! That sort of drain will cause heat if through any of the fuses in the fusebox so just have a feel to see if anything is hot.

The DME electronics main relay sounds a bit suspicious but you really need to read this thread where a member had a similar issue with high drain caused by the water pump running continuously. The thread contains some great info with which fuses to check etc... https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... ilit=clamp

Thanks, water pump constantly running was the problem, took my local specialist a while to locate, new water pump and logic board required.

Result! I'm not quite sure what the logic board is that you mentioned though. All the electronics for the pump are built into it.
