So then, am just curious to know how can this happen to a plug when its being removed. Plugs 3 & 6 both cracked whilst being removed. They could be the original or possibly only the second set of plugs in the car. Its only done 60k miles but 14 years old. Below is the condition of a complete plug! Managed to remove all the bits from inside the chamber but my heart was in my mouth a couple of times.

What did you use to remove them? A "proper" spark plug socket or a "std" socket? If the former, make sure the rubber insert is still in there..

You probably just slanted the plug socket when removing and cracked the ceramic
Real easy to do

Ceramic is really easy to break but if they are the originals then lots of heating and cooling may cause cracking, possibly.

Std socket Mike and yes the rubber is still there. Didnt see the need for proper plug socket as the rocker cover head was off which made it a lot easier, or so I thought. Had a few cold sweats though lol.

If i change them again will buy a plug socket next time.

The plugs were in really tight so i could have slanted the extension to get the leverage to looden them off. Should they be torqued tight? I hope not lol

Yes they should be torqued in, however deposits and corrosion can make them siege and be really hard to remove
You just have to use correct tools and brace so socket pivots not twists over

For washered plugs, as per the Zed, just nip them hand tight and a further 90 degrees to compress the washer. That'll be fine. I also put the tiniest smear of coppaslip on the threads to prevent seizure.

I'm a bit concerned seeing this my 13 year old is still on original plugs and I was planning to change. My spark plug sockets have lost their rubber insert and looking on Amazon not many look like they have rubber inserts. Is there any recommended sockets? what size are the spark plugs?
