Using Oil at a crazy rate

Not done it myself but I have heard that sticking rings can sometimes be freed by using some flushing oil in the engine - without driving it, but engine running for a while. Beforehand, remove the spark plugs pour some light oil in and leave overnight. Then start up and watch the smoke!!. You will of course have to change the oil. If this fails it might then be major surgery.
