Hi all,
I recently bought a 2006 E85 BMW Z4 2.0i, during some maintenance to replace a failed eccentric shaft sensor the mechanics have since found substantial pitting to the cam-lobes caused by moisture due to a failure of the engine breather valve.
The garage I am using is a BMW/Mini Specialist and from past experience are brilliant, but they don't have the specific specialist BMW tools required to remove the accentric shaft from the engine to replace the cams. I have since been in contact with many other specialist garages within the area and all don't have the tools to do the job which leaves me stuck.
From what I know the special BMW tooling is required to release tension from the shaft springs and levers which if done incorrectly would lead the engine to grenade itself.
Has anyone else previously had this issue, or knows of anyone that may have the tools needed so that I can get my 'Z' back on the road?
I would really appreciate your help on this as I'm currently at a bit of a loss as to what I do next.
Many thanks.
(I did contact the main BMW dealer, but they didn't have what I needed either...)

The tooling for the N46 valvetrain is available online and is not crazy expensive, so if you are really stuck that is an option.
I have even seen a video of someone using an arrangement of cable ties to keep the lifters and springs together when removing the assembly!
The correct tooling is very handy though, especially when it comes to locking the camshafts and counterbalance shafts for re-timing the engine. Although they shouldn't have fallen out of place if the chain was not completely removed.
