Rear Brake Pipe renewal

Post by colb » Mon May 10, 2021 7:26 pm

After the last MOT in September identified corroded brake pipes on the rear nearside I ordered a set of HEL stainless flexi pipes for front and rears with the intention of sorted them out when the spring weather arrived. Finally got around to giving them attrntion using my scissor lift, in order to get enough clearance to remove the centre plastic cover to get at the fixed metal pipes that run front to back I had to lift the car with my standard lift pads then lower the car onto a pair of drive on ramps front and back on the nearside then change the lift pads for a pair of extended height pads and relift the car using them. That gave access to the plastic 10mm nuts that hold the cover onto the car so it could come off to check the state of the fixed pipes.
Inspection revealed the pipes were still in good order front to back but where they emerge in the rear arch they were lightly rusted, rubbed down they cleaned up to bright metal and were treated to some black gloss metal paint. The flexi pipes were found to be corroded at their ferrals hidden underneath their plastic guides and the line connection guides. Had to take off the lower guide and cut the pipe out of it, it was seized solid. Cleaned all the guides and fitted the new flexi hoses, they come in a pair for each side. 14mm and 17mm spanners fitted the stainless fittings on the new hoses.
Plumbed the lines in and set about bleeding using my airline vaccum bleeder, system bled till no air bubbles emerged and checked all joints for any leaks, none found so wheel put back on and the centre plastic line cover put back on. Offside to be done tomorrow and maybe the fronts if the rear dosn't fight me. Would have hated attempting this job using axle stands, the extra height with the lift made the job far easier.

Rear Brake Pipe renewal

Post by Mr Tidy » Mon May 10, 2021 8:40 pm

That's a great job.

My 2nd E86 had advisories 2 years running for corrded rear pipes just behind the plastic cover so I bit the bullet and got them replaced in copper
in 2016 by a former forum member in the NW whose name we don't mention any more! Back then he didn't have premises so did them on a scissor lift similar to yours.
Coupes because stunning!

Rear Brake Pipe renewal

Good work, it seems to be the plastic cover that holds mud etc which promotes the brake pipe corrosion - i wonder if it could be modified to reduce that happening?

Rear Brake Pipe renewal

Post by colb » Mon May 10, 2021 9:08 pm

The advisories on mine was at the first MOT in my ownership thought it was going to be the short metal pipe between the two rubber hoses leading to the caliper that was going to be the issue, however the pipes as they emerge from the plastic cover into the wheel arch looked a bit crusty. The pipes cleaned up ok and were painted with black gloss metal paint so they look new now. Couldnt say the same for the two rubber flexi pipes, the rubber was hard and the short metal pipe and the hose ferrals were very rusty where they are gripped by a plastic hose support on the trailing arm, top and bottom connector supports were seized had to take the lower support bracket off and cut the hose out of it so it could be reused with the stainless hoses being used to replace them. Tarted the support fittings up with metal paint same as the fixed metal pipes.

Might have a look at adding some split conduit to the pipes where they exit the underside shield and loop up into the wheel arch, as a bit more protection now they have been cleaned up and painted.

Rear Brake Pipe renewal

Post by patriot66 » Mon May 10, 2021 11:55 pm

I've just recently carried out a 3.0i brake transplant onto my 2.5i, in the process fitting HEL stainless flexis and also unexpectedly a short section of new Cunifer at the n/s/r. In the process of undoing the coupling between the n/s/r flexi and original hard brake line it kinked ! The hard line on that corner was already copper which being soft is why it kinked so presumably it had been changed sometime before I bought the car. Anyway, all this was done with the car up on axle stands which tbh wasn't too much of a hardship. I bought myself a new pressure brake bleeder which literally makes bleeding the brakes a one man job and sooooo easy....much better than my old Gunson Eezibleed !

Indeed, for less than £40 it's decent quality and excellent value. More importantly it worked brilliantly
