Well im having a lot of fun with my Zed recently, had the front shocks and top mounts done last week because they were gone to the point of nearly failing. There is still a small knocking noise from the suspension, I think its probably an ARB bush or drop link hope its not the wishbone balljoints was going to have a look at it when i get some time I don't think its a safety issue as all the big bits have been changed.

Anyways that not what this thread is about, its about my breadbox saga.

Today I pop into town when I get to the carpark I goto reverse into my space, put the car in reverse press the accelerator nothing happens. The dash shows that its in reverse (Big R on the mini display; its an auto if you hadn't guessed). It just revs and revs but doesn't move.

Think f this I have a meeting to get to so try to push the car into the space and just leave it to worry about later get stuck in a pothole that I can't push it out of aggggh. Get back in to rethink the plan as im getting annoyed I just want to park my car. Think like a computer turn it off and back on again now I have a gearbox light on the dash. Engage drive it still goes forwards awesome, reverse nope it revs. forwards yep good reverse it works yay. Park up and leave it winner worry about it later.

Get back to my car a few hours later turn it on gearbox light, try my code reader (Carly and it doesn't work - see the other thread Carly is broke) so drive straight to the mechanic. He is going to have a look at it in the morning when its cold he thinks the gearbox may be low on fluid as I have had a new Tourque converter and a fluid change recently to fix a rattle noise that has been plaguing the car for a while.

Put my mind at ease best case its the oil worst case a shot transmission.

Reverse gear D-G clutch drum usually causes this fault.

Very common.

Is this a major job to repair, just asking as I have an auto and... nice to know, just in case :wink:

Yea,

Its not good.

Box out and repair from there,IIRC they usually break the clutch drum where the circlip sits.This causes no drive in that particular drum,as it cannot create any clamping force.

Collected the car this evening good news is its nothing crazy.

The gearbox took another 250ml of oil that's not bad, they reset and reprogrammed the gearbox and the car is sweet. Speculating given the amount of rain yesterday something got wet and messed up the comms to the gearbox ecu. All of the under trays and guards are on so no problem underneath could this be the good olde door leak in play could can or k bus have got corrupted when wet causing something like this?

Sometimes my passenger footwell is damp so sorting my door cards needs to move up my priority list.

Still not able to read the fault codes carly is still broken even with the new update.

Fantastic news, that video link on here looked very daunting. Think I would go with a 2nd hand or recon box.

It was quite expensive in the end the rattle was the torque converter had that replaced with a rebuilt unit from Germany and a fluid change. It's been running great apart from that blip back in August and again now.

A similar thing has happened as my original post, was driving back home down the lanes Thursday night(motorway was shut oh well excuse for a Burger King and a blast). There was a patch of standing water about 2-3" deep nothing crazy some might call it a flood I call it a puddle. Slowed to walking pace assessed the situation and decided it was safe to drive through (it wasn't)

Exit the puddle back onto tarmac hit a bump kerklunk sounded painful but decided to limp it to the pub down the road (Dark lane vs lit carpark) as I round the corner kerklunk as the transmission light comes on and it goes to limp mode.

Limp it to the pub and find the clunking noise is a bent guard on the underbody (was at 90degrees pointing down the attached photo is after getting home and having to traverse speed bumps)

Phoned my specialist on Friday he said it sounds the same as last time something got wet so use it over the weekend and see if it drys out if not bring it in on Monday.

That bent cover looks like it acted as a way for water to funnel straight onto the electrics then. Surely the electrics are better sealed than that though ??

@Bugzyg very sad, but the car makes me smile and I've spent enough in maintenance this year that I may as well keep it up and eventually it will be a reliable car. Chalk it up to an impulse buy and buying the first one I saw should have ran when heard the word auction. You live and learn chalk it up to experience.

@kis like a cat indeed just not quite as fast those new F-Type cats are pretty quick.

So got the car back (no charge fix) When they went to put it on the ramp it had no reverse so had to push it out. Took off the main plug to the gearbox and and said it was full of water, took it apart give it a good clean reassemble all faults cleared.

When I collected it I got the reminder its a sports car not a rally car so try to avoid any significant water

This is the socket that's exposed on the side of the box that gets wet and the plug fills with water.

My car's an auto and don't have this problem, surely that plug is water tight. All the more reason to make sure the cover panels are kept in go condition and not hanging down

You would hope so, I do think you were right in the fact that cover that was bent could have forced the water into the plug. This seems to tie in with the fact both times its happened I went through a very large puddle. The car seems fine in the rain spray and splashes fine its just when we get those super heavy rainstorms that leave standing water.

Its going to have to be one of those things I need to be conscious of and monitor if it happens again.
