Hi all, this is my first post so please forgive me for sounding too newbie like. Today I was able to buy a 2005 Z4 3.0 (51k miles) for only $500. Of course seeing as how it was only $500 there was definitely a going to be a few issues with it, but honestly nothing major...I think. The car has been sitting untouched for a few years so I didn't even attempt to start it because I want to drain and replace the fluids and gas first. The main issue that I've discovered is a rat or something crawled in the engine bay and chewed a bundle of wires coming from the passenger side firewall. I haven't tried starting the car, but everything seems to come on when I turn the key. Does anyone know a: what all is in this bundle and b: can it be easily replaced. Pics attached, thanks for your time.

Hi and welcome. Sounds like a bargain. This would be a simple job to anybody who can wield a soldering iron to patch in and sleeve some joining wires. A decent auto electrician could fix this in no time.

If that is the biggest issue you find with a car you paid $500 for then you’ve won some form of once-in-a-lifetime automotive lottery - I really hope that’s the case, welcome to the forum

If you can trace the loom by eye it will probably give you half an idea what it’s for. Lights and horn for example.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I honestly don't know why I didn't think of just soldering the wires earlier. Such a simple solution didn't even cross my mind. Like I said, that does seem to be the main issue although the third brake light is busted, the side mirrors seem to be yellowed from sun damage (I think), the windshield cowl and gasket both need to be replaced, and there is some clear coat peeling/damage on the side mirrors. Still, nothing bad considering I only paid $500 for it.

If the mirrors are yellowed then it sounds like you have the auto dimming ones that have bled/leaked. To confirm this has the mirror got a black bezel. If so then they are auto dimming.

Welcome to the forum OP.

$500 for a 51K miles 3.0i is a steal - even if it needs a few jobs done.

Good luck getting it sorted.

I just looked and they do have the black bezel. Thanks for the tip. I'll look for the same type to replace them with.

Wow what a bargain for a decent looking Zed. You may want to chop the black tape outer back and stagger the new wires at slightly different places, this will avoid a bulge in the loom when it's all taped back up. Hope that makes sense.
