Trigger Angel Eyes to Come on/off When Unlock/Lock

Post by sam1832 » Wed Aug 08, 2012 11:48 pm

So this a DIY i wrote a while back for my E46, that i have adpated slightly,

Unfortunatly i dont have any pics of it, as i done this in a E46

SO here goes, hopefully it helps some people out

This guide is for when the angel eyes only have one wire to pick up a +ive feed from and will work weather they eyes are running as DRL's or off of the side/dipped head lights.

This will let you AE come on with the footwell lights and go off when they go off

So for this you will need:
  • A few meters of thin wire
  • 1 scotch lock
  • 4 diode's
  • heat shrink
And a few tools
  • Philps screw driver
  • Side cutters
  • cimp tool and crimps
  • stanley knife
So after installing your angel eyes, you need to run a wire from the inside of your car to the engine bay, this will be your new trigger wire.

I then ran my new trigger wire from my side lights into the engine bay you need to split the wire in to two. I used a straight connector crimp with one wire in one side and two on the other. So that you can run one to your left head light and the other to your right headlight, once you have your wires run to your head lights cable tie it all in place.

You will need a diode to prevent your angel eyes from turning your interior lights on when you dont want them on, and anouther diode to stop you interior lights from turning on your side lights

You will have to excuse my shoddy wireing diagram in paint lol but it does the job,

So the Key:
yellow box- interior light
Yellow Circles - angel eyes
red - +ive
black - -ive
green - New trigger wire
Pink - Main trigger wire (that comes from either side lights or switch live)
Blue - wire connecting angel eyes together
dodge black triange - Diode

Image

So the as you can see from the diagram a diode needs to be placed on your new trigger wire faceing your angel eyes
Also anouther diode needs to be put into your main trigger wire, to stop your interior lights lighting your side lights up

REMEMBER DIODES HAVE A POLARITY AND WILL NOT WORK BACKWARDS

Next we are going to make the part with the diodes in:

Now you need to cut off a section of your thing wire, your gonna need about 8inches

Cut it in half, then cut it in to four 1 inch lengths and then strip all the ends of the wire

take a straight connector crimp and push two 1 inch lengths into the same end and crimp

Now on the other end of each of these wires you need to solder the -ive leg of your diode

On the other side of you diode, the +ive you need to solder the other two one inch wire you cut, then using two more straight connector crimps connect these to the ends

So you now have a Y shape

Put some heat shrink over the diodes

You will need to make this again for the other side, So you should have two Y shapes

So back on the car now you need to connect you Y in looking at one side at a time, Im gonna assume most people have CCFL's and are using there side lights to turn them off and on, but if you are running them as DRL's or from the dipped beams this is fine.

Starting on the drivers side:
So you have a wire that comes from the +ive of your side lights to your inverter. Your gonna need to cut this about 1-2 inches away from the inverter and strip both ends of the cables.

Now take the Y you just made using the crimps you crimped on connect the end with two wires in one crimp to the inverter wire and either (it dosent matter) of the other two wires to the wire that goes to your side light, Now you have one wire left over this should be connected to the wire that you run from your interior lights crimp it in,

Do this for the other passenger side too

Now you can connect up the wire to your footwell lights, I used a scotch lock to tap into the +ive feed of the light, i cable tied my wire so it didnt get caught up any where.

Test by locking and unlocking your car :)

Good write-up! But does this mean that the angels eyes only go on when unlocking, locking and when engine on and no headlights
So from the moment you turn your headlights on at night, the sidelights and thus agnel eyes are turned off?

I don't think I have those "side lights" but I noted that the "US indicator" option on my module makes the US indicators go off when I turn on the lights...

No they come on when you and unlock

When your interior lights go off they will go off

When you lock they will go off

To get them to come on as drl you will need to wire them to a switched live from somewhere instead of the side light wiring

Thought so... With my comfort light module I have them on when locking and unlocking and when the lights are on, but I cannot get them on as drl. But I can have the outer indicator bulbs as feed for the angels, which I can put on when locking, unlocking and as drl. Those are then off when the lights go, but then I have a feed from the "side lights" that I can use. So if I understand your write-up correctly, I could have my AE's on all the time with both feeds, provided that I put a diode on each feed?

Please don't use scotch locks on car electrics, they're terrible, terrible things.

I've used one to tap into the footwell light +ive

Itsbhardly going to cause any problems

Could solder it but that's going to be more hassle than it's worth

What do you mean? They run as sidelights. I just want them to trigger when I unlock also

BPM-Z4R, you can also try this: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=40688

a lot easier and more possibilities... My angels light up when locking/unlocking the car and they are also connected to the sidelights

Get a

1n4001 diode

They are relatively common and very cheap (under 10p)
