I quite like how they seem to reverse colours when the lights are on. They look dark in the middle, and red on the edges

Yep, mine do this, though not as pronounced as your dials are backlit a different colour. It is a great wee mod - if you need to do it

Very cool mod (I've always thought the all silver needles were just a bit dull). Excellent instructions on removing the cluster (which I had to do a year ago, since there was a filmy buildup on the inside of the lenses).

While you have the cluster out, you can also reduce the volume of the warning chime speaker by putting just a bit of cotton over the speaker outlet (I don't know about you, but that thing sounded like a submarine dive-dive klaxon in mine...). With a layer of cotton in place, it now produces no more than a gentle "ding" that is just loud enough to remind me to take my key when I forget.

Does anyone know if you can get different decals for the zed so they look like the more modern e92 style??

You're welcome

Mine is dusty too - different Z - so I need to get round to doing the same myself.

How To Change Instrument Cluster / Dial Needles

Hi All ....reviving an old thread ....I fancy having white faces in my Z4 E85 2006 ..........i have found Tooth Discs ( the name for gauge faces ) and gauge needles on German Ebay . Seems quite a straight forward job, albeit a bit fiddly. Has anyone done this lately and know of any Uk suppliers of bits .There is also a bit of information about the project on YouTube . The other question is if a had a donor Gauge cluster ..........would the mileage etc info be in the ECU and then just a plug and play .

Iirc the dash clocks are one of a number of units that store mileage data amongst other things. You can't just swap them over otherwise you will get the tamper dot on the mileage reading. It's better, well easier to just mod your existing clocks although the particular mod your talking about isn't that popular and could give you issues come resale time.

Despite the origin of the first post (how to change the 4 needles from grey to red on instrument panel) is 9 years old, today it helped me 100% to remove all parts of it. To give it a good clean. Now the instrument panel looks like new. Thanks!
