Retrofit Cruise Control

Post by Fordo » Sun Jun 10, 2018 10:29 am

I also recently retrofitted cruise!

I bought a loom from srhutch, both the loom and his instructions made the job dead easy. He's designed his loom to need no cutting or splicing together of wires, so it makes for a much neater job.

Hardest part was in the engine bay, getting the long blue cable into the correct black box. (for the n52, the blue cable goes in there, to a pin on the grey loom plug.). You have to route it though a black rubber tube - i disconnected all the cars loom plugs there, straighter tube out, and used a blunt bamboo bbq skewer, with cable gaffer taped to one end. Then i could carefully poke skewer through the tube, and then pull the cable through.

Very pleased with the result, and only took about 2 hours in the end

I completed this last night on my '04 Z4 3.0. Dead easy and worked a treat. 15min job in total. Bought my stalk from Soper's with forum discount. No loom required for mine.

Beware, the previous stalk is now out of production and unavailable from the dealers (it may be found secondhand) and this prompted me to do mine now, before they stop production of my version... I also found the dealer option to be cheaper than those on Ebay.

I just can't get used to the cruise stalk. Every time I go to use it I flash the driver in front of me

I find it fine, but then I had the same thing on my 1 Series for over 6 years. Mind you when I first had that sometimes when I went to turn it off I would indicate left!

On one of the BMW parts web sites, they listed various versions of cruise control stalks, probably fitting other/older BMW's. Some were marked as no longer in production and unavailable. This list looked to be in chronological order and the previous version to my one had stopped production, which made me think this version would be out of production next...

Does the lower cowel, the bit you cut, come complety out so it's easy to work on? Without removing the steering wheel?

Yes, can be a PITA to remove sometimes... I had to walk down srhutch’s garden a couple of times while he resorted to ever more firmer levels of persuasion to release mine...

Most come apart easily, others you just have to pull applying continuous pressure. It will come apart and so far I’ve had no breakages. They are small pins with an interference fit.

Sounds ominous.... :-o

I've scanned through 20 pages here and understand that the build cut-off date for requiring the loom is October 2004 ..

My car has a build date of 27th October 2004, first registered 14 April 2005 ... Do we know for sure when the cutoff date is ? Is it 30th Sept / 1st Oct? Or 31st Oct / 1st Nov or just some random date in October?!

Thanks!

Hey guys

I think i'm a little bit late to the party :D
I've got a 2.2 M54 produced on May 2005. I just got the stalk and the retrofit loom.
unfortunately almost all the links to the instructions are expired.
can any one help me with the instructions? maybe uploading them somewhere or if you know a link which is still available.
i went through the whole 20 pages and googled a lot but i couldnt find out how this has to be done with wiring on M54 engine.

cheers
