Any news / gossip about 4 cyl engine for E89?
Hi,
New member from the UK, not yet an owner.
Hi, I am currentley on my 2nd 3 series which I've bought new from dealers.
I am looking to change my current car after it's 3 years old in October.
I am keen to go for a new Z4, however both my wife and I travel over 50 miles per day each just going to work and back.
(And that's in opposite directions so we can't even car share...lol)
Looking at the quoted consumption figures for the current range and current fuel prices, it would make me weep spending
all my hard earned wedge on petrol.
Does anyone know if there are plans afoot for a smaller / more economical engine such as a 2.0 4 cylinder?
If not, I might have to look elsewhere.

Nothing on the horizon yet, although the old Z4 2.0 was popular especially as a lease/company car so I'd expect it to arrive at some point. Maybe in a year or so.

Was told by dealer when we bought ours in January that a lower engine would be out for tail end of summer

Thanks guys,
I have been to look at the new 5 series which is very nice and the new predicted 3 series also looks good.
But I have been hankering for a drop top, in particular a Z for a few years now, so fingers crossed.

Just a wild guess....a 4 cylinder candidate will come but will be first introduced in the next generation 1 series (2011-2012). The 4 banger will be a turbo engine with around 200bhp / ~250nm@1200rmp. This new engine will replace the 2.5 liter engine. I cannot imagine that a non turbo version will be used in the E89, it is just too heavy!

Wasn't a 4 cylinder engine planned for the rumoured Z2?
I can't really see the new Z4 getting a 4 pot motor myself.

It is all about downsizing and adding turbochargers to compensate the power loss.
Some big advantages...75Kg lighter than 25i? Engine can almost mounted behind the front wheels?

A powerful 6-cylinder diesel is however better than a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol in the new Z4.EdP wrote:...and make it front wheel driveksher wrote:BMW should consider putting a 6-cylinder diesel engines in new Z4.

While they are superb engines and BMW have had great success with the diesel in the 6 series, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want to drive with the roof down in a car with a diesel engine in it! A lot of people disagree with me on this, but to my mind even the best diesels (BMW) rattle too much at idle. I just wouldn't. But then again I fitted a new exhaust to make my I6 sound better.ksher wrote:BMW should consider putting a 6-cylinder diesel engines in new Z4.

But BMW had already put diesel engines in other convertibles already (e.g. 1 and 3 series). Audi has TT Roadster diesel. Of course, roadsters should only be petorl. But BMW is moving to EfficientDynamics.
