Internal boot release button retrofit

Post by RobbiZ4 » Sun Nov 05, 2023 1:09 am

This weekend I've tested to release a locked boot lid on a real roof issue with the original ISTA+ software.

Situation:
Roof perfectly closed, not touched on this day, but one of the boot lid switches sent a wrong "open" status, the other switch sent a correct "locked" status. The internal led flashed in red, the windows could not be closed, the boot could not be opened.

ISTA+
There is a service function on the CTM module to lock and unlock the "softclose" mechanism. These actors (motors) on both sides of the trunk locking system turned to open or close. So far so good....

But - this doesn't open the trunk lid, only the softclose locking. That's a big difference!

There is a 3rd motor in the middle of the rear locking system, that has to pull the two wires to unlock the latches. That is the fuctionality, where you guys placed the unlocking hack behind the BMW emblem.

I was not able to execute the ABL (i.e. "Ablauf", like "process") function to drive this 3rd actor. Neither in the CTM module, nor in the JBE (junction box) module. This ABL fuction was greyed out due to the real failure situation. No way to get into the trunk in this faulty situation with ISTA+.

At least, I once again solved it with the pin12 method.

Does anybody of you guys know another option/function in ISTA to open the trunk lid?

In the next days I will try it once again on my own Z4, currently without any roof fault. Will come back soon...

Well,
today I've tested with INPA on my Z4. I was able to open the boot lid on the following path:

Launch INPA - Select E89 - Body - Junction Box Passenger JBBF - "F6 Ansteuern" (Control) - "F6 Heckklappe öffnen" (open trunk lid)

Important is, that the ignition is switched on. Maybe that it was off when I tried it on the Z4 with the roof issue.

My INPA doesn't contain all translations into English. Therefore I've noted the German functions and translated it by myself.

Good to know..result!

I may just try it over the winter when I dig the laptop out….

I have confirmed that it can be done with ProTool. Listed under "Interior" then Junction Box (JBBF), then "Control" and finally "Unlock Tailgate"

The question remains can it be done with an active error??? I'm assuming it can, since the infamous Diagnose Dan did it with whatever scan tool he used.

Good to know as I always carry Protool in the car

Perfect, that is the same naming path as in INPA.

I assumed already earlier, that his video is based on an artificial fault. He hadn't to diagnose, he knew what he had built into the car.

I will do an additional check with my ""Y3 Roof Diagnostic System" the next days, where I can simulate the real roof fault situation I found in the Z4 named above.

Simulation done.

Both microswitches on top of the two rams in the trunk always have to be in sync, either pressed or unpressed. Not accepted by the CTM are different signals in case of the typical aging of these switches as well as timing differences above a small tolerance in case of being switched.

Test 1:
I put an external switch on my Y3 diagnostic system test board and sent two opposite signals to the CTM.
Test 2 and Test 3:
On my test board, I removed the corresponding jumpers from the internal switches and simulated a wire break on each of the two switches.

Good news: On each test case I was able to get the trunk lid opened with INPA.

Doesn't matter. If your roof stucks far away from home, you do have enough time to search on your mobile.

Thanks Robbi! That's extremely valuable info. Knowing I can get into the boot with ProTool allows me access to the Ctm module and pumps.
It would be interesting to know if the boot can also be opened with Bimmerlink.
