Exhaust tips

Hi guys! Okay, right upfront probably make sense to declare I am rubbish with cars… I love them, drive them and spend money for other people to repair them; otherwise I haven’t a clue…

I have noticed the exhaust tips on my 2011 23i are pitted and looking like they need to go to exhaust-tip-heaven! So, I have a couple of questions: how are they connected and what’s the best place to get a (aftermarket) replacement.

Thanking you lovely folks in advance for all your wonderful advice and help.

Tom

Hi, have you tried cleaning them up with metal polish?

Yes, they often do polish up well with something like Solvol Autosol.

Had a stage 1 detail today (bloke was recommended by a buddy and, I have to say, did a great job)… chap had a go at them but said they’re too far gone and he’d just strip them down.

So, I’m thinking to replace.

As I say, I’m a hopeless romantic when it comes to cars, so need some help!

Ah, that’s the sort of thing I was thinking of getting!!

Do the old ones just pop off? Or are they spot-welded?

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Even as a car-diy dis-enthusiast, I am suitably motivated to give that a go…. Wish me luck

Technically they just slide off but there may be years worth of gunk making that tricky so you may need a bit of a persuader.. i used a dead blow hammer at the back of the tips which also requires a bit of arsing around on the floor but its easy enough

Yep a good spray of WD40 and a bit of persuasion from behind with a bolster and a 10lb tapometer and it flew off

I used an oil filter wrench to remove my exhaust tips, something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

I then fitted these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08 ... UTF8&psc=1

Ah they're not bad for that price. I was hesitant to get the carbon tips as I wasn't sure of the right inlet vs outlet measurements to go for (don't have an accurate way of measuring and nobody seems to know).

My tips came off with a good firm yank, no welds or screws. Its a 20i... the 35i tips are welded on.

2009 30i here - are these welded on or will they come off with a mallet/filter wrench?
