Front Bumper cost/rescue

Post by McHaggis69 » Wed Sep 08, 2021 4:37 pm

Hi,

was visiting Portobello beach today and entered a car park (some rough ground) not realising a raised manhole cover would catch the front bumper.

Its split the bumper in several places and scratched it to hell on the underside nearside. On that side its pulled the clips which attach it to the wing.

I'm going to assume its a throwaway job - anyone any clue the ballpark for a new front bumper painted to match and fitted?
I've seen the actual bumper for sale for around £200 which was surprisingly cheap I thought.

Hello

This is the list of parts that were changed in my car when it was hit whilst parked.

These figures are from BMW and the car was repaired at the dealers

I had a quote from loyds refinishers in Plymouth to swap a std bumper for an M style one and paint to match, they quoted me £350 all in.
Add the price of a used bumper, around £200

Good to see BMW reaming the insurer for parts most likely not required at all....

Body repair shops can weld plastic these days, it’s the labour of getting it off, welding, sanding, respraying, and re-assembly which is the costly part. I had a cosmetic rear bumper repair from BMW at about £600.

So I would be looking to pay about that much for a complete hassle free job.

If you are able to remove the bumper, source the clips and call out a mobile body repair technician, they could probably do a smart fix for about £200ish but you would have to re-attatch it.

Best to get some quotes.

A new bumper may work out just as expensive as repairing the old one.

Thanks all - I'd be happy at £500-£600 ish all in if I can source it all at that.

Feel like a complete muppet. You know when you hear that grind and scraping... :headbang:

I'm guessing it's the clips on the top corners that have broken, they break pretty easily when you catch the bumper on anything.

Part number is 51117192158, about £20 off eBay IIRC. A bit awkward to fit but not complicated, if you want to try to get it repaired and refit yourself.

Don't beat yourself up, we've all been there

I would have taken the excess hit as well if it wasn't for my dashcam!

Yep, they are a god send and will be very valuable in preventing prison time once the highway code and associated road regulations change later this month

Defo worth a go. If they were aware of the issue or it was so obvious that they should have been, then ask them the question why it wasn’t repaired in a reasonable timeframe and in the meantime coned off to prevent drivers from doing what you did.

All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

I had a bit of a scare today, driving to work at traffic lights I’m second or third?? Behind a 4x4 we start to cross the intersection & obviously due to his height he drives straight over a cardboard box, which I just don’t see & ultimately can’t avoid.

I have to drive over it as I don’t have the option of swerving round it & cant stop in time.

Fortunately I’m pretty sure it was empty & the car must’ve shot it out to the side or flattened it because I pulled in to the next bus stop & got on my stomach. Couldn’t see the box or any major damage underneath but reading this I’m going to have another look & check I didn’t miss the fact that my bumper is now on a random crossroads in Four Oaks :!:
