Engine Air Filter Question.

Post by javis20 » Fri Jul 16, 2021 6:34 pm

Previous owner installed a K&N air filter. When I opened the air box there was 2 filters. A K&N on the front half of the air box and a thin Mann filter on the opposite side of the air box.

I had to pry the Mann filter out. Seemed like it was glued or snapped in place. Was this supposed to be there?

Engine Air Filter Question.

What type of filter is that in the picture, certainly looks nothing like my K&N filter.
Don't think it will even fit that side of box.

K&N was attached to the other side of the air box, where it should be.

The filter shown is a Mann 10 261 33 S01. So K&N attached to front side of air box and this Mann filter on the opposite side (throttle body side).

My airbox was tight closing with a k&n panel filter, I’ve got no idea how they managed that with 2 air filters in? :o

The mann filter was hard plastic and actually fit with some sort of pop pins. Both filters fit together perfectly. That's what threw me off...

The K+N filters are now largely discredited..they were fine in a time of either no filters or poorly designed airboxes.

There ability to filter out fine dust is very poor plus their performance as they clog up with dirt is also poor.

For most people most of time a high quality OE class filter in the OE air box is the way to go

Already tossed them both out and replaced with an OE paper filter.

I use to be a fan of k&n filters until I read that they can damage your maf sensor, better with an oe filter changed regularly in my opinion

As long as they are oiled properly they should be OK. However, I don't want to be fussing around with cleaning and oiling an engine oil filter. Life is too short.

Do you think maybe someone lifted the lid just enough to fit the K&N, didn't see the other filter stuck in the top half and assumed there wasn't one fitted?
Cannot think of any other logical answer to that one.

I trust changing back to one filter has improved the performance of your car now it can breath.
