Mid-life crisis car?

Post by Starman » Fri Jun 04, 2021 8:25 pm

Well, I am officially mid-life now and I just bought a Z4 now that my kids are off to college so maybe... however, I owned 3 S2000's at various times between 2000 and 2010 so its not out of my nature to have a roadster, you decide :)

Mid-life crisis car?

Post by Cuprat » Sat Jun 05, 2021 6:59 pm

I bought my car at 49 (is that mid life?) for spending time with my 12 year old son on trips. Clearly my wife appreciated this :)

It was a retirement present and 99% of my friends have asked when I start my hairdressing course :) The laugh is on them though as it seems to be a great draw with the old ladies !

Mid-life crisis car?

I bought mine when I turned 65. Always wanted an impractical car and this was perfect. Next car will be an Alfa 4C, because it doesn't get any less practical.

Ironically, after me starting this thread, I took the Z4 to the local garden centre on Thursday (that in itself shows I'm old) and as I was walking back to the car park, a chap about 40 with his two kids and wife walked past the Z and said "now that's a proper car" to his kids! :o

Mid-life crisis car?

The reality is that if you drive a sports car a lot of people will think you're a tosser, and if it's convertible a lot of people will think you're a poser. The irony is that if the car makes people think you're a tw@t, and you enjoy it anyway, then you probably are the opposite of a poser.

These days a poser's car is a Range Rover or big Audi/BMW/Merc SUV.

AndyBeech wrote: Tue Jun 01, 2021 8:30 pm Don't get mid life crisis comments, then I am only 30's! I do often get from the neighbour/s comments like 'you and that car' and 'washing that car *AGAIN*?'. It's always with that undertone of have you got nothing better to do or bit sad always messing with your car. Reality is I don't even wash it that often probably compared to some, maybe once a month or when it's really dirty. I do the odd bit of maintenance though more often.

Strange really, I don't walk past, glance at them and go, 'oh doing gardening *AGAIN*?' or pop in their house and say 'oh watching Netflix *AGAIN*?' like I would care what they do with their time. Always polite about it of course and make a joke out of it, think some people find car's as a hobby a strange thing for some reason.
Yeah I got mine when I was 27, so not exactly mid-life crisis. I keep mine clean a lot and I see the neighbours looking and watching. But it's a nice car, and I wanna take care of it and keep it looking nice. I gave it a full clay and wax yesterday and took it out for a ride and nearly everyone I passed in the street turned their heads. And that's why you keep it clean! Even had a few tell me "Nice motor" when I was stopped at some red lights.

You cannot generalise like that. Generalise like this, everybody is a Poser and we like people to look at us and we think that they are thinking, look at that intelligent, handsome person driving that superb sports car. I wish I was him/her.

So, basically everyone is a poser, except those that aren't. :P

Mid-life crisis car?

Post by Starman » Tue Jun 08, 2021 11:20 pm

Ive been a car enthusiast my whole life and owned a lot of nice sports cars. Cars are tribal and no matter what you own, there's someone whos going to rip on it (especially since the start of the internet where everyone can easily publicly express their opinion). Its the old Chevy vs Ford thing. Doesnt matter what car you own, there's a buncha people out there that want to rip on you about it. The people that do that are mostly just happy people in general. I just got my Z4 so I only have a few hours in it, but my newest car is a Honda Ridgeline. All the "big riggers" rip on it as not being "a real truck"... but its kinda funny because it services my needs on my 5 acres PERFECTLY... and their "big riggs" would do me no better other then driving a big gas guzzling brick 99% of the time when I dont need it. I've learned to just realize that these people are just unhappy. Theres also a lot of the other "mid-sized" truck owner competitors that have things to say but they are probably just jealous that this "not-a-real" truck (being unibody) out performs theirs in just about any "truck-like" comparison test (and vastly better on any 99% driving my car on the road" situation..

I owned 3 Honda S2000's in between 2000 and 2010 and very active in the enthusiast market. You better believe they spent a LOT of time ripping on Z4's.

'Ere, lay off the Rangies etc.

You can't just stereotype like that. It's the person, not the car and born to pose is born to pose whether it's cars or clothes or whatever.

Thankfully, at the moment anyway, we can still buy a car for it's intrinsic qualities.

A posing tw*t in an SUV is still a posing tw*t in a Nissan Micra. :P
