155mph speed limiter question

Post by Pondrew » Tue May 25, 2021 6:58 pm

Are all cars limited to 155mph, even if they are not capable of reaching the speed; ie is it a generic part of the software regardless of whether it's needed?
Or for cars that can't reach the speed is it not "activated" or present?

155mph speed limiter question

Are you thinking along the lines of your car originally would not hit 155 but after the remap it might be capable , so if its now capable would it not have originally been fitted with a limiter so top speed may be higher?

Maybe! :D Just something I thought of earlier as 'hypothetical' and would be interesting to know. I admit I do think of the strangest things. The 18i is down as top speed of 137, 20i as 146, 28i as 155. They go up in increments of 9mph, so don't know if even the 28 has a limiter.

Therefore, if the N20s don't have an electronic limiter, a remapped 18i or 20i with more power than a standard 28i is theoretically the fastest Z4 ever made!

Evolve remove the top speed limiter on their maps, I’ve never exceeded 70mph of course :o

But do the 18i and 20i have a limiter from factory, when not required, that's my question?

I should think so, otherwise Evolve wouldn’t have to remove it

155mph speed limiter question

Post by Mr Tidy » Tue May 25, 2021 7:58 pm

So it looks like they all have the limiter regardless of whether they will get to 155mph!

I remember a similar topic regarding E85/86s and someone said the limiter only activates when the car is in 6th gear. If E89s are the same a manual one should get past that speed in 5th, always assuming it hasn't run out of revs.
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

And in the DCT 35iS’s could you drive it in manual and use the six gears if theoretically the limiter only engages in top gear (7th)

The other thing I remember while researching the G29’s is that someone from the uk had theirs on the autobahn and gps reading was something like 164mph for a car that allegedly has a speed limited to 155 mph

G29 M40i Thundernight with Ivory interior, all option packs (here for a while, hopefully )
G29 M40i Misano Blue all option packs (Gone 26k of fun)
E89 35iS, Valencia Orange, Design Pure Traction pack (Gone)
    E89 23i sDrive, Silver (Gone)

Oh boll*cks! I was only asking for bragging rights in the pub (assuming I ever get inside a pub ever again).

Still I could always just make it up. As my old dad used to tell me "never let the truth get in the way of a good story" :D

And assuming you still have a Z4 at that point that can’t officially break the 155mph limit

Maybe the G29 owner was doing something similar!

Anyway who is going to be the first on here to test the theory? Unless soemone already has.

Apologies to Pondrew, but at least pubs are now open again!

Any mapping outlet can remove the 155mph limiter from your ECU, give celtic tuning a ring and they will tell you if you have a limiter on the ECU straight away
