E90 335i N54 Engine Swap

Post by sumotan » Thu May 20, 2021 6:41 am

Hi Gents,
Came across the above with manual gear box for cheap. Suddenly it got me thinking what if I swap this with my N20.LOL
Question Gents is it an easy Swap ? Yes many of you will say sell the 28i & buy a 35i. Unfortunately at where I am 35i is
thin to the grown, infact even my 28i is super rare all the rest are 20i. Anyway it's just wishful thinking for the moment.
Perhaps when I get the itch someday.

Cheers & thanks

E90 335i N54 Engine Swap

I wouldn’t have thought it would be easy or cheap for that matter, just off the top of my head you’d need the ECU, wiring loom, and exhaust, probably cooling pipes/radiator, inter cooler and ducting?, not sure about prop shaft and diff.
Anything is possible you just need deep pockets 😁

E90 335i N54 Engine Swap

Post by R.E92 » Thu May 20, 2021 10:01 am

I'm not aware of it being done. The engine will swap straight in along with the turbos but the ancillaries and pipework around the engine would need to be changed for 35i versions since the 35i and 335i have different charge pipework. The fuel control and pipework is also different in the 335i. You also have to change the aux belt and tensioner as there's no power steering pump in the Z4. I think once you add up all the parts you need to buy it gets expensive then you need to consider the transmission and diff/axles as the N54 will shred the 28i drivetrain.

I'd sell the 28i and get the 335i honestly. The 3 series chassis isn't as capable but it's much more compliant and the exhaust system that comes on the 335i coupe model sounds much better than the N54 equipped Z4.
