Late to the party as hadn't seen the post until today.

You look as if you've decided on your resolution and will front up the business concerned. As for a police led prosecution, proof the video related to your car would come from your statement and Dashcam footage showing you driving your own car to the premises. Whilst they may be insured by their own insurance in the course of business, there will be offences relating to taking without owners consent and the driving offences you've already commented on.

There's nothing wrong in asking for your money back - you have every right to be dissatisfied with the service you have received, and you won't be opening yourself up to a counter allegation of blackmail as previously posted.

Trading standards remains an alternate route if you don't want to report the matter to the police.

If no damage as a consequence, I'd be asking for a refund, enjoy the free repair and go somewhere else next time. If he wants to deny it then you have plenty of other options.

Been a lot said about test drives, but in this case, how far do you need to drive a car to check a paint repair is ok?

Depends on the weather, if sunny 16 miles, if raining I'd halve that. :P

OP - whilst frustrated at your lack of urgency in marching to the garage and letting us all know what happens (for purely curiosity reasons) , I think you have settled on an informed and pragmatic approach. Not soft at all.

I'd be far more likely to go full Karen in the same circumstance and reflect afterwards that I'd been a bit of a emotional plonker and not achieved my desired outcome as a result.

Your dashcam has GPS so should be very easy to prove it's your car.

A few weeks ago the car in front of me drove off the road and down an embankment in the trees because the traffic in front panicked when a blue light came towards us (panic = stop!) and this poor sod had no option but to rear end her or go left, quick reactions.

I stopped along with others and he was ok and the other people had it in control so I left.

I caught it on my dashcam and looked in the local (Devon and Cornwall) force site and they have a specific link to send footage.

I think I said earlier in the thread to show him the video and see what his response is, if he denies it or kicks off then it would be plod or trading standards.

If he apologies and offers some form of remuneration then I would part as friends and never darken his door again but also quietly tell my family and friends to avoid like the plague.

While he may have insurance to test-drive the car, that's a test drive within the limits of the law which he clearly has not done and he will know it, in fact if I had a car go in for paint repair, I would not expect it to be driven on a public road at all.

Yeah, it did occur to me that he was either too close or wasn’t concentrating, either of which is probably the case but I do think he was unlucky as I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a concertina effect of someone a few cars ahead hitting the brakes hard.
