Considering 255/35/19 & 235/35/19 on 10J & 9J

Post by True-Blue » Sat Mar 06, 2021 4:41 pm

Thinking out loud really, but grateful for any input as always...

Running 9J fronts and 10J rears and I’m considering reducing the current tire sizes down from 255/35/19 & 275/35/19 to 235/35/19 and 255/35/19.

It seems that 235 is the minimum recommend with for 9J and that 255 is the minimum recommended with for a 10J .

Assuming this combo works, I could either reuse my current front tires on the rear and just buy a pair of new fronts or replace all 4 tires.

Current tires are Contisport contact 5’s and the fronts (which would become the rears) have very decent evenly worn tread.

I’m thinking replace all 4 really as I don’t want miss-matched tires and I’m not sure I’d want to buy conti 5’s new for the front (or 6’s if I can’t find new old stock)

I’m in two minds though, as I doubt I’d get much back for the conti’s on EBay/Gumtree etc.

We have 265/30/19 on 10" rims and were considering upping the size to 275 when new tyres are needed. However would stick to 30 sidewall.
Not sure how 255/35 would look on a 10" rim.

Thanks for this, I thought I’d read recommendations for 245/35/18’s on 9J 18’ alloys, so ‘in my mind’ thought that 255/35/19’s would be workable on 10j 19’s - from wider reading ‘the internet’ suggests 255 is minimum sensible width for 10J :?

Why are you thinking of downsizing if it currently works?

What are the offsets on those alloys?

Mainly because I think it looks a bit like a moon buggy!

    and, I think having circa 250 BHP-ish it’s a bit ‘over-tyred’ - 255F / 275R - bigger isn’t always better, although I can understand why a 35i or 35is owner might want to go that big :?

Thanks for this, the tires would be stretching an extra inch front and rear, although within legal tolerances as far as I can tell.

I want to try and avoid 30 profile, but also not look too ‘balloony’ ... I wonder if 265/35/19 at the back would make enough difference visually.

It just feels like it got rear tires that should be on a Lamborghini from 1985

I washed mine today and took a few pictures, just happened to take one from the rear quarter that sort of shows the rear wheel, arch and profile.

If you want me to take any specific pictures for you tomorrow let me know

I’m always interested on how the handling is affected by those sizes that are clearly a long way from the OE settings..

Without doing an A B swap you’ll never know..

Of course most oversized tyres/wheels are done for cosmetic reasons...

Again not sure how stretching a tyre over the widest rim works, but it won’t improve rim protection....

I’ll try and get a picture from the rear today, and you can see what I mean about how it looks

In terms of stretching, found an interesting post on stanceworks, basically 10j is the same width as the widest point on a 255 tire, and with a 35 profile this is considered as zero stretch, hence is perfectly legal.

My e89 definitely feels more agile & lighter on its feet with 17” wheels/225 tyres, it doesn’t stop me from fitting the 19”s in the summer months though purely because they look so much better. It feels a little “clumsy” with the bigger wheels fitted :?

      Rob..

I’m always amused with this desire to have the biggest alloys fitted to cars...almost all cars will have much less unsprung weight and less rotational momentum with the same rolling radius configurations with more tyre and less alloy wheel.

Doesn’t surprise me that you get a perceived better ride/handling with 17” wheels....on Audis my favourite first thing is to get rid of the wafer thin tyres and put something with at least a 35% ratio, usually with different alloys.
