Suspected waste gate rattle

Post by Pooltee » Thu Sep 10, 2020 6:54 pm

Good evening all

I have had a bit of a rattle on my Z from cold for a while now, but it is starting to get progressively worse.

When starting the car from cold, there is a very metallic rattle coming from around the turbo area. Makes the car sound horrible. After about 2 minutes the noise does go away mainly, but can be heard if you blip the throttle.

I can find lots of waste gate issues relating to the 6 pot, but nothing on here for the N20.

Has anybody experienced the same, and is there a fix that doesn’t include a new turbo.

Cheers, Paul

could it be the timing chain rattling?

Very confident it’s not the chain. Chasing the sound down in the engine bay it is 100% coming from the turbo area.

The timing chain generally is more of a whine rather than rattle..

This is very much a rattle. Best way I can explain it is like keys rattling against a can. Only really noticeable for the first couple of minutes on cold start, or if you give the engine a sharp rev when warmed up.

Listening around the timing chain area there are no unwanted noises at all.

Interesting reading. The video in the second link you posted is exactly how my car sounds on cold start ( bloody awful), so it looks like I will be having the turbo off soon and see if the modified part sorts the issue.

Always something isn’t there!

You may want to temporarily change your signature too. :poke:
I'm sure someone had a rant about it a while back and you don't want to give out ammunition.
