Afternoon all, my 30i has a BMW battery on board, but I don’t know how long it’s been in the car. Among all the numbers on it is the date hidden somewhere?

hi,

you can read out using software, when it got registered with the car, though it is not production date, if that's what you want

Hi, thanks. How would I do that if I don’t have a “Carly or similar? I just want to know how long it’s been on the car to decide if it is due for replacement (the production date would do much the same I guess).

I thiunk this only works if any new battery was registered. You could end up throwing away a good battery if it has been replaced and not registered. Pop in to any garage and get a discharge test done, takes a few minutes and will tell you for sure...

Ah yes, hadn’t seen that. By strange coincidence mine is 21\09 so a week different to yours.... and also 11 years old. Time for a new one methinks !

The car isn’t stop/start, does it need an AGM battery or is a “normal” one sufficient?

OK thanks. Now back in the day, I’d order one and spend 5 minutes installing it. But it seems for my convenience BMW have ensured I I have to get the damn thing registered and I don’t have any equipment for getting that done. That said, I have just enquired wether the Carly thing being advertised by V8rumbler will do the job.

I bought one of these, will be handy for fault codes should i get any.. will register the battery and reset service lights etc, handy bit of kit and no annual subscription

Worth noting that bimmergeeks protool can do battery registration and a million other things for a bit more than the tool mentioned above. You'd need an android device and a $20 cable in addition to the tool. But you ALSO get coding of your car, and its also no subscription like Carly. Honestly I see no reason for anyone every to buy Carly if Protool supports their car. Its worlds better.

You can use App BimmerLink (not BimmerCode) to get more informations about your battery

Ah if only I could get that working for me... I need to talk to a dealer about whats supposed to work if you DONT have a subscription, but I can NOT get any sort of code to appear on the head unit like it is supposed to in order to link to the car. Dont think my car has a working cell connection, based on the info I see on the hidden service menu.
