It’s been a while , all great except for a cracked alloy ! Pot holes eh ! So thinking of binning the run flats and go for normal tyres and a can of foam , what’s the general consensus, only really drive it in the dry although we do live in Devon so it does rain a lot :)

You're right, it has been a while! :lol:

Good to know you are still enjoying it - apart from that cracked alloy.

I left the run-flats on my first two Z4s because they had plenty of tread and I was too mean to replace them. But my MC came with non run-flats, a can of foam and a compressor from the factory.

A few years ago I did a driving trip around Wales with a mate and we agreed a puncture was the most likely cause of a "show-stopper" so I found a spare front wheel, had a tyre fitted and chucked it in the boot with a jack, breaker bar and torque wrench. It does leave vey little boot space but as it's normally a 1 person car I can live with that, especially as I did a few road trips last year. But a wheel in the boot of an E89 may mean no roof-down driving so wouldn't really work.

Some people rate repair plugs, often called "rats tails" but I've never tried them. My disaster plan is the RAC!

Assuming you've got 19" wheels keeping the run-flats probably makes another cracked alloy more a case of "when" than "if" by all accounts so swapping tyres might save you that aggravation.

That’s for that. All the tyres are good , but £1000 for 2 alloys is more expensive than 4 tyres !

1 year of the 7 I've had a 35iS, BMW Insured Warranty paid £5,000+ for work on the car.

In the other 6, there've been only 2 in which I didn't make a claim. The total paid by the insurers outnumbers the policy costs by a lot.

The insurers have never questioned any claim and the work, by Sytner BMW Leicester, has always been well & promptly done.

Surprise, surprise, I wouldn't have a 35iS without this insurance. That said, it's an excellent car and I still have it.

I bought my 35i, (same car mechanically) a year ago with 24k on the clock, full history and annual safety checks from BMW.
I purchased as an upgrade from my 23i following advice from my local indy who are excellent.

In my one year of ownership it has cost nearly £600 for a DCT sump, gasket, gearbox filters and oil, all paid by warranty direct, (not covered by BMW warranty).
The DCT sump is plastic and WILL warp and leak. You can buy a CNC machined replacement for around £1000 but they are thicker and you cannot replace the undertray which leaves the DCT exposed to the elements :thumbsdown:

From my own pocket,
1. Oil/filter change - £70ish with labour.
2. Swapped out the adaptive suspension for an eibach kit, a massive improvement in all aspects
3. Swapped out bridgestone run flats for Pilot Sport 4s £616 = £30 fitting

All the items others mention above are weak spots, water pump is electric and notoriously dodgy as pretty much any mechanic will tell you, HPFP and injectors are the same.

You could buy a 35i for less without the expensive suspension and simply replace the std suspension with eibach for around £750!
Interesting that you have had a really good experience with Warranty Direct, for some reason I was under the impression that they tried to wriggle out of every claim, good to hear that is not the case from someone with first had experience.

I might be wrong, but off brand warranties (in my mind at least) seem to steer you away from BMW dealers & into the hands of indies due to the rates they will pay per hour, plus you have the back & forth getting quotes etc thing to deal with.

Some are more than happy with that - but for me - I'm used to the new car under warranty perspective, and cannot be arsed with going outside the main dealer network.

I know it costs more.

My pal that used to work at one said that 50% of the staff were sales / the other 50% were there to find ways not to pay out.

The BMW warranty at least is more hassle free (but you pay for it).

Taken the plunge just fitted pilot 4s tyres ( with a compressor and foam in the boot just in case ) let’s see how it is in a few miles time !
