Corect numbers;

I haven't found the part numbers for the correct cables from the antennas to the module.

Now for the non-original parts I've got;

Yes that is my intention, although I've not filmed anything for the combox and I've not really started the DAB, and I already have at least two other videos to finish first, so it won't be for some time yet :(

For mine I just bought a genuine one, but since then I've found out that the VW 26 pin connector does the same job, so I've tried one of these on a customers car and it was perfect...

Is it possible to do a hybrid of taking the Android screen and hardware and fitting it to the OEM flip up module?

So, removing the oem screen from it’s housing, and then replacing with the android screen and associated electrical gubbins.

I bet you have thought of the same idea, just wondering if it would fit at all?

Oddly enough, yes I have thought of thus, as well as a guy in the US and another somewhere in Europe. We all discussed it at some length and the biggest stumbling block is that the control and power for the up and down motor is from the same pcb as the screen, so somehow you'd have to find the correct circuit and then build som sort of new pcb to retain the flip action. We decided it simply wasn't worth it, and assuming that why the Android screen was built to way it was. Someone may come up with ut eventually, you never know.
Personally, for what I use it for anyway, I find the addition of the MMI box enough on a day to day basis.

Interesting, presumably there is some simple logic: if power on activate motor for x micro seconds and vice versa. etc.

An Arduino Nano could be programmed to perform this function on the motor.

The reason why I am interested is, the screen units seem quite easy to source, where as the whole retrofit for OEM requires finding some pretty rare items, like the cage mount for the Navigation DVD unit.

I guess part of the issue with trying it, is that you are left with a pile of expensive parts which no longer work for either solution if it does not work or fit!

Hi Dave,

Another question… can you forsee any fitment or coding issues fitting an LCI idrive system to a pre LCI car?

Not sure what you mean by LCI iDrive system?
So thinking of 2 directions here....
If you mean pre and post 2013, then the only differenceis that the post screens have is a shiny surround, nothing else is different at all.

If you mean CIC to NBT then without major surgery, that's not possible (well it is but it'll be a bit of a Frankinstein's monster of a hack job!!).
And just to clarify there, ALL E89's that had iDrive were CIC right up to end of production in 2016, even though all other BMW's were NBT from 2013.

My iDrive retrofit was using a 2015 screen and a 2013 headunit in my 2011 Z, absolutely no issues whatsoever :thumbsup:

I found something on ebay and I am pondering…

Sorry to drag up an old post :D

If anyone is considering a full iDrive retrofit then on eBay at the moment is a headunit, screen and iDrive controller up for £749.

**1 Nothing to do with me, not my sale, just an heads-up in case anyone was interested.
**2 Bear in mind the other components that are required that do not come with this eBay sale.
