COVID Z4

Post by Bunker » Fri Apr 17, 2020 4:39 pm

So, on the 20/3 the Z was booked in for an MOT. After waiting for a while and supping on waitress cappuccinos and browsing my email I was called to the service desk…. 'How'd it get on' says me, a sullen face tells me all is not quite right. 'Excessive dense blue smoke', oh bloody hell…. Thank goodness I took out the BMW warranty!

After a day I was told that they need to take off the head for further examination and then it all stopped, as we are all aware 'Lockdown' happened. No car for the foreseeable, after having a chat and explaining I really need the car as I work for the NHS (Sold my daily driver 2 weeks prior and the new i3s delivery has been bloody delayed because of COVID) they were very kind and gave me a brand new 218d to potter around and visit all the services around the South East.

God knows when I will see the Z again, bless it… talk about self isolation!

Had you not noticed any dense blue smoke yourself before bmw told you? :?
How often were you having to top up the engine oil?

Often when the turbo oil seals fail and/or the oil feed line leaks you get excess smoke especially on initial start up..

I thought the workshop side of the main dealers was still open, especially for Key workers. I was under the impression its just the showrooms that are shut

Poor thing is currently in mid open heart surgery, post-operative (COVID) support would be most welcome.

Hooray, the Zed is back after 3 months in lock down. Can’t begin to say how valuable the BMW warranty was and will keep it up as the repairs would have cost a fortune (believe it was £6k in labour alone!)

Couldn’t have had a better week to get it back and oh how lovely it is to have my right foot commanding that 35i power plant.

Happy Zedding all :D

Valve stem oil seals were perished, quite shocking for a car that has done 50k. Apparently it was an engine out job

I think you are absolutely correct, pre COVID it was a garage queen but now will have to be used every day (As the i3S was cancelled due to the pandemic). Looking back, I am embarrassed on the limited use.

This has now been rectified and now the Zed is main car, for the life of me I cannot understand why I didn’t do this before.
Anyway, happy now and will continue to visit the forum on a regular basis.

Have a great weekend all

One month on and all is okay, 400 miles done so hopefully that is enough to start opening the throttle. It feels like new. :D
