Join the car and drive another 100.000 km at first.
To be honest, why do you want to change the diff oil by that very low mileage. It isn't a task to be done weekly.

Just for peace of mind and then I have covered all the bases when buying a used vehicle. Some diff oil and a new plug and seal and I'll know that part is good for a long time.

I agree it may be overkill....

PS: Love Munich - we were just there for a family holiday before the Virus. Love Bavaria full stop... My Z4 will be going there when the crazy times are over

And if you would by another used car with let's say 50 miles, you would do that as well?
Pardon, but that task is nonsense, not worth the additional risk.

Better invest the time and money into a check/replacement of the roof hydraulic loom. That will get weak and will break depending on the age of the car, not the mileage.

It's funny the advice that is passed around.
In biking regular oil changes suggested due to the gear box ripping the molecules apart and reducing the effectiveness of oils.
So i normally replace every 3000 miles. OK the bike is probably worked harder than the car.
Yet we are quite happy to take BMW advice that gearbox oils are lifetime (say 60k) and diff say 100k.

Interesting thoughts....... Clearly I'm not stupid and would not be changing diff oil at 50 miles.... :x

I assume you run the business staiger-neuffen? I didn't see any idea of prices - do you do a check and then tell people to change this or that?

No, don't think you are stupid, only that a diff oil change is nonsense @40kmls.
No, I'm not Staiger, I'm RobbiZ4 from Munich. But it's my know-how...

The current status of the loom can only be checked by removing the roof shell.
Most E89 will run into roof probems between the age of 8-12 years. Costs will run up to 2.5-3k€ when a complete roof refurbishment is required.

Well, BMW takes twice the price for
  • roof diagnosys (1-2 days in the garage)
  • replacing the complete loom when the hoses are broken
  • replacing the gas springs in the roof
  • replacing the micro switches in the boot
  • ...

I think the most reliable cars in a way are the first few months production. Everyone working and having inspectors do their job. Then the inspectors are pulled away for other lines, so cars get thrown together splash dash.
So roof lines might not have been placed in the right positions.

I'm sure BMW does charge more but it's no comfort to know there is an expensive time bomb waiting to happen with the roof mechanism....

Well, it's not more than a set of wheels or a spectacular xhaust pipe. And these costs have to be spreaded over a usage of let's say 10 years. Not worth to discuss about for a in most cases 2nd or fun car.

Well I certainly didn't mention a set of expensive wheels nor a flashy exhaust pipe..... I just consider that a folding roof overhaul it is a big cost to pay out. Over 10 years it's certainly not so much but it's a big expense when it arrives like that... I'm quite sure that this company know their subject and are good value compared to others and BMW..

I only wanted intially to just talk about basic maintenance on something I could do for little money - whether it was essential or not is of course questionable... Your amazing insight into costs and what is worth doing and what is not worth paying is certainly quite authoritative... I will note all you said for future reference....

Thanks
