I had a spare Amazon Echo Input (the one without the built in speaker) so thought I would install it in my E89 last night. I know I can get this on my phone but can only activate Alexa on it by pressing the home button, so not really hands free.

Fairly straightforward using the Alexa App on my phone to create a hotspot which Alexa can connect to for the internet connection. Used the USB in the arm rest for power and the Aux in input for the sound connection to the cars sound system (briefly tried connecting it via BT but thought it easier using AUX).

I had left the Echo on the end of the armrest (between the hinge and the storage netting) so I can open the armrest.
Slightly concerned I will damage the power/aux in cables though as they are trapped in the armrest door when shut.

I was surprised the unit stayed on even after I took the key out of the ignition (not sure if the power goes off to this USB after a certain amount of time). For now I unplug it when I leave the car. When I turned the engine back on it remembered the settings and carried on working.

It works well 8) . Picked up my voice without issue (over loud music!). Even turned the heating up at home. I no longer have to add music to the cards HD, just ask it to play what I fancy.

Just need a USB splitter for the armrest port as I use that for my phone too.

Nice idea, very functional and a good way to stream music to your car handsfree

Just use a cigar socket USB plug for your power, this will turn off immediately you pull the key out.
Also if you're happy with the position of the Alexa then run the cables to the rear and inside of the plastic panel, then you can feed them into the centre console without trapping them in the lid (also looks like a nice neat install this way)

Thanks Dave  The dashcam uses the cigar socket at present so I will have to use the armrest USB-do you know if this IS always powered on please?
Good idea about the wiring, will take a look. Would I have to take the tray out to feed the wires through do you think?

Sorry I shouldn't have said cigar socket, I should have said 12v accessory socket :?
Both the cigar socket, front of centre console and the rear 12v socket are powered off when you turn the car off. The USB is powered via the radio system and is on a different circuit altogether which I believe is time delayed.
If you use one of these in the 12v socket in the centre console cubby, then (and I'm assuming your dash cam is one with a lead and built in 12v socket plug) so just replace the lead with a USB lead and then use the double socket for the dash cam and Alexa

Honestly can't remember how much room there is, I'll check.
