often wondered how you get the lights on the z to flicker like that?

The flicker is caused by the fact that the LED lights strobe at the line frequency of the electrical power. If the frame rate of the video capture (in this case 60fps) is close to that frequency (but not the same), then the effect becomes very noticeable...and kinda cool in slow-mo shots. Pair it with some RGB Chromatic Aberration and the effect can look quite amazing.
