Service book?

Post by DR-Z » Sat May 18, 2019 6:32 pm

Finally collected my E89 today (2014 model) from BMW main dealer. It doesn't have a service book, which I find odd, but they insisted that service books are no longer provided, as the service info is stored on the key. Can anyone verify this?

That would mean that when I come to sell the car in the future, if I sell it privately I can only show the service history if I get a print out from a BMW dealer. Seems a bit crap.

Odd never had a car without a service book. May well all be on line, but most folk still like to see a stamp on on a quaint piece of paper :)

A mate of mine bought a fairly late 3 Series a while ago, and that had no book - it was all stored on the I-drive!

Which is fine so long as the hard-drive doesn't crash - progress, eh!
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

My previous 2016 E89 did not have a service book, bought the car from new and was informed that it was stored on the key which I had to present every time I took it into Sytner for a service. The service dept always seemed to access the history with no problem and offered to print it out for me. Same scenario with our other car a 3 series cabrio on a 2013 plate.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like they're telling the truth then, but wonder if that means I have to use main dealers for servicing. Will raise this with my favoured BMW specialist.

My local indi. carried out an oil change on my 3.5is in March and he was able to access the car’s history and the work is now recorded on the key. I contacted a main dealer last week to discuss some work I was considering having done with them. They could see that an oil change had been carried out in March and was now recorded as part of the car’s official service history. Not sure what criteria BMW uses to allow indis to access service history and to add to it.

My local dealer accesses all the service history from the key but I do also have a service book which I have had to ask them to stamp in the past.

I have a hard-copy service booklet, but it's designed to say so little that it's not worth the paper it's printed on. So, I'm happy for the key to be my friend.

Well, being old-school and liking paper I've ordered a blank service book (ebay) which I'll try to get stamped up with its three previous services, just for the record. Even if I have to fill it in myself it will record the history, and going forward I'll make sure it's filled in, along with the key of course.
