Wind deflector flew off at speed
Not long had my Z4, and had the roof down for the first time yesterday with this beautiful sunny weather
I was enjoying the open roof driving experience, accelated sharply up to about 80mph (private road ) and the wind deflector flew off, fortunately landing inside my car!
Why did this happen, should I only have the wind deflector up at low speeds or does it sound like it wasn't fitted properly?
I've put it back on but I must say it does seem like a pretty flimsy bit of kit, especially given the price of it

No I think it's the original optional extra BMW one, it's black mesh and the head tubing has slots it inserts into..

I think it should withstand high speeds without a problem. I too have driven fast with mine on a few... ahem, private roads, and it’s held fine.
It is a bit tricky to locate properly however, so I think this is probably what the issue was with yours. Check your handbook for the correct procedure but I’ve also attached a pic of the appropriate page which helps with a few diagrams.

E85 not E89' but I have seen 165+ on the clock, with the roof down. So either damaged or not fitted correctly, would be the likely cause.

Awesome, thanks very much for that- really helpful as I'm away and don't have my manual on me this weekend. Will follow the guide and hopefully that's the end of it flying off

I think this is probably the answer.
Ours was fitted wrongly when we picked it up and the same thing happened.
It was only after refitting it that I noticed that it fitted better than it did before.
Hasnt done it since.

Off-topic but it's beyond me why there are coat hooks in this car - especially in the place they've put them!EssexZed wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2019 2:14 pm I think it should withstand high speeds without a problem. I too have driven fast with mine on a few... ahem, private roads, and it’s held fine.
