no internet connection required. You only need a connection to send or save configurations

Thanks for info guys...yes..pay about £50 for the magic box and then they hit you with £60 prescription to gain access to the full app.
Guess I'll think about whether I need one that badly.

If youre on android you need the bluetooth dongle. The Wifi dongle is for apple devices.

You can use a cheap bluetooth OBDII dongle from eBay, but not all the features will be available in the app.

Can the E89 connect to Carly with the OBDII cable (like it does in the E85) or does it have to be bluetooth?

I just remembered - when I test drove a 3.0i E89 I took the Carly app with me and ran the 'used car check' and it worked ok with the cable. So that answers my own question. Makes sense really, since all the BT dongle is doing is converting the signal from the OBD socket to BT. Using the cable cuts out the 'middle man'

The cable will work for coding and diagnostic but the developer purposely restricted the other functions like the ebrake control and transmission function to the adapter only.

The carly app has been cracked for a while now. There's versions floating around that have all features unlocked and update checks disabled so the developer is just trying to make as much money as possible on the hardware until someone works out how to remove the adapter check and people can go back to using those £2 ELM327 adapters.

There's "Carista", "Bimmercode" and "Bimmergeeks Pro Tool". They are all better than Carly. Bimmercode even works with generic OBDII ELM327 adapters.

The best and cheapest solution is to learn how to use BMW Standard Tools. You need a laptop, a DCAN cable and a bit of free time.
