Anybody any idea of how many average cds I can load onto the hard drive? I just found this function and find it really useful.

That depends on how many songs are on the CD, I don't know what compression BMW use, An average 60 minute CD has about 500MB of data, say if it compress`s to 128kps, 1000 songs will take up about 2.5 gig

Can't add to to what Rusty said but do you know you can add music to the hard drive via the USB in the glove box too?

Yeah I get that, but I either have music on my iPhone which I steam over the bluetooth option or I have loads of CDS which are a pain to get out of the cd case, load and put put away while on the move. So I have been using the hard drive option to be able to access without hassle while driving...its allowing me to listen to music that I haven't heard in a while. I was just wondering how many cds id get on the hard drive...ive done about 10 up to now.

I believe you have about 12 gig of hard drive space on a Zed, how many CD`S can you load,, well forget about them being music, think of them as data, for example if you have a CD with full orchestra, the data will be high (and less tracks on the CD, as it takes up more room) if you have say one man and his guitar, it will take up less data (or he puts more tracks on)

Then there is compression, some like iTunes automatically reduce a song to 128kps which means they are compressing the data, so you can get more on a hard drive, some compress to 196kps, less compression so better sound but uses more space.

As I said earlier a CD on average is 500mb so if we have a 12.5 gig hard drive, in its true format you would only get 12.5 CD`s again depending what type of music,, but they compress so, if BMW compress to 128kps,, roughly a 1000 songs = 2.5 gig,, so you would get 5000 songs on there, average of 10 songs per CD say, (or if you listen to Yes 5 songs :D ) you can get 500 CD`s on there,

I wouldn't think there compression isnt that low, so I am guessing you could get say 100 CD`s loaded, but the only way you are going to find out, is keep loading them till it says its full
