Anyone Use A CD Phone Holder?

Post by AnubisZed » Tue Aug 07, 2018 8:36 am

Good morning,

As title, does anyone use one of those CD slot phone holder mounts?

Mine as in the attached (old) photo is mounted via the air vent. It's quite stable, doesn't seem to bounce much but does cover some of the air-con controls a bit and if you adjust the angle of the vent it can "pop-off".

So I'm looking for a good looking and practical replacement mount and wondered how much (if at all) the CD mount would cover anything?

Anyone got one that they can take a photo of, in a Z4 obviously, lol  8)

Just out of curiosity, why do you *need* to have the phone mounted so it's visible?

I know this is personal preference, and this certainly isn't me trying to tell you what to do, but I chuck mine on the passenger seat, or in the armrest because I don't feel I need to see it while driving - I have Bluetooth for phone calls and MP3s on a stick (or the HDD) for music

I use the CD slotmount in my Alfa and find it works well. However, in the e89 the head unit is much lower down and the phone can get in the way of the gear stick. Might not be such a problem in an auto.

Simple answer, I stream music and as you can see in the photo it doesn't show track name on the head unit so I like to see what's playing (screen stay "live" all the time), also with it being in a close distance I can use "Hey Google" :driving:

Now that's a good point, a good reason to see a photo

We have the same mount in ours although I dont use it, Nicki does for satnav on her phone.
The only thing I dont like about it is it deforms the felt in the cd slot and it doesnt seem to go back to its original shape.

I've come to opening the ashtray and dropping my phone horizontally into the space and propped up on the ash tray lid. It fits perfectly (Galaxy s8), and looks quite cool IMHO. However, if you accelerate hard it usually pops up onto the gear lever. I'm still deciding how to stop that (without having to restrain the right foot!)

Have you thought about mounting it to the vent with a less obtrusive holder? I use the below to mount to the vent (blocking it which is not ideal) but it looks right and is out of the way. The only issue that the phone sits best horizontally.

The alternative that I've seen is to mount it to the passenger side trim, just to the left of the passenger's climate control buttons. The same magnetic mount, but with a sticky back, albeit slightly further away.
Current: Still thinking...

That's pretty much what we do too. It's only so we can use Waze for sat nav.
