This is a really silly question but it is bugging me. How do you get the sat nav to auto zoom? It says in the book to turn the control until it says auto, but mine never does - I get to a picture of the whole of Europe then nothing further! It wont change my life, but I hate it when I cant figure something out.

Yes I have idrive. Basically most sat navs zoom in and out automatically dependant upon your speed, my Garmin on the motorbike does. I am sure it says in the handbook that you can set the BMW one to do the same, but I cant. Maybe I will re read the manual.

With you now, I don't know about the zed, but on the 5 series, auto zoom only works when the sat nav is in north orientation only

Nope, no change when in north orientation. Might be it only works when there is a route in it, I will try that later on!

I think mine does the auto zoom but only approaching a junction other control point while actually navigating. Not speed related.

I usually use mine in the split screen view, the bigger left section is zoomed in more (25ft?), and the right section zoomed out.

As you approach a junction the right section swaps to a junction view.
