With all this glorious weather the roof has been getting it's fair share of usage and is going up/down a few times a day (I never leave it open when parked as I don't want light fingered passers-by or seagull sh!t inside).

Anyway - when you put it back up sometimes (probably about 1 in 3) either one of the windows goes up and then back down to half way. Keep pressing the roof up button and it then goes all the way up.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason why - sometimes it's the passenger one, sometimes the driver one and sometimes neither  !

Just wondered if it was a gremlin in my car or this was something BMW had done to make me go a little mad ... has anyone else got the same 'functionality' ?

Cheers!

Hmm I have had that a few times. I think its a safety feature as if you get your fingers trapped in it...shoot me down if I'm wrong please. The doors at the top don't have a frame round them and as they come up I have found on the odd occasion they do not sit in the rubber seal correctly and end up coming half way back down.

This is normal...so.....if you press the unlock button twice within quick succession, the window of whichever door you open will drop down halfway for easy access. I use this feature regularly for tight spots when I park it as far away from other cars as possible and close to a hedge/wall.

Sometimes they can need resetting:

Hold window switch in the up position for about 20 secs since it closed, do this for all.

Cant remember why or how, but it tells the car where the closed position is.

I get exactly the same behaviour but not as frequent. Was annoying at first but in two years it has not been a problem so I carry on

Cheers all! At least I'm not the only one ... it will continue to amuse us as we place bets on which window will do it this time we shut the roof

Happened a few times in the first month of my new Z4 (November 2014). Back to the dealer who said it just needed a reflash (dealer speak for don't really know?).

From Nov 14 to now (13k miles) I guess it's happened again maybe once or twice - always the passenger window. If I carefully drive the window up manually it seems to fix it. Annoying, but not worth going back for and it's the only fault on the car so far.

Had the same thing on my Jaguar XF in 2017. Something in the air around here....?

When it happens use the switch that operates all the windows. First use it close the windows and hold it for 5 seconds. Then use it to open all 4 windows fully and keep it pressed down for 5 seconds. Just done mine this afternoon after experiencing the same problem. All is well again. Hope it works for you.

This is a well known fault on early cars where anti trap was too sensitive. There’s a ‘quality enhancement’ Available from bmw which entails fitting a relay to stage the closing of the front then rear set of glass which solves the issue.
