@AnubisZed - thanks for the heads up regarding the potential issues with this product. As usual, the support offered towards forum members by others beggars belief :x

On the flip side I’ve had two reinhold modules fitted to my E85 for the last ten year without issue.

With respect we have one side of a story, and perhaps as said the refund issue was an oversight.

Interesting write up, I went for the smartop basically for the ease of fitting :), my only other experience of an after market was a Gaptech on my E85, and I had no issues at all with that in 8 years, the question is now, are you going to replace it and if so what with

Like I say I'm sure there are plenty of satisfied users out there, and had this one not gone wrong then I'd still be as well.
I appreciate that this is one side, but I am not hiding anything and I'm not ranting I'm just writing it down as it happened. This was going to be written anyway prior to the problems getting my money back AND I was not expecting ALL of my money back it's only when PayPal got involved that this happened and I'd have happily spoken to him but he has decided to no longer speak to me so that's that!
He hasn't replied to my last email and nothing regarding the intervention of PayPal, I was happy to deal with it amicably but it is what it is now.

Its a shame to hear the Reinhold is no good on the z4. I had one on my SLK and it worked great.

I wouldn't say it's no good on the Z4, just that mine packed up on my Z4 and I then had trouble getting it sorted. :?

I had exactly the same issue with the same module, only difference is mine failed in the open position!!

Unfortunately, given the BMW design decision to position the module under the folded roof, this meant the only way to remove the module was to completely dismantle and remove the roof. In Reinholds defence, a refund was quickly paid, but I lost out on a significant sum in having the module removed. As above, once the module was removed, the boot closure again worked, and the roof closed as it should.

Personally, I wish I'd seen the information above, before purchasing. Especially as I now know, the impact can be even more financially challenging, if the module fails in the open position.

As an update to this.....
I managed to obtain a used SmartTop (as I simply cannot justify buying a new one = cost over function!) of which I installed in a matter of minutes. It's been there virtually since I last posted on this thread and it's working perfectly as I've used it extensively over the summer months (and what a glorious summer we've had!!). As it comes with the USB input cable, I now want to try to run this into the cabin area somehow so that if it were to go wrong I could at least hook my laptop up to it and try to diagnose any fault.
A very nice piece of kit indeed and highly recommended if it's something you want to have.

You do that to a household 3-pin plug, if you wired one. If it moves (or falls out) clearly theres a crap connection?

Many of the cables along the railway infrastructure are older than me, probably you too. Therefore old and brittle. If you add chewing rodents into the mix... doesn't end well.

Glad you got it all sorted now S&T Dave (albeit with a smart top module)
